Welcome to Biting-Edge, a blog shared by authors and vampire experts, Mario Acevedo and Jeanne Stein. We’ll cover urban fantasy, vampires, pop culture, and all things Joss Whedon. Unlike other fantasy blogs, we don’t insist on body cavity searches (unless you ask politely). Snarkiness is most welcome...though we won't promise not to bite back!

One of my favorite finds of the week from Flavorwire How to Drink Like Your Favorite Author

Here's a sample:

Charles Bukowski

Drink: Boilermaker. For the uninitiated, a boilermaker is a whiskey shot paired with a beer, a drink that, needless to say, packs a lot of punch. Again, Bukowski was a big drinker, so it’s a little hard to nail it down, but even if this wasn’t his absolute favorite, we think it jives with his hardcore, drop dead drunk, party boy persona.

Motto: “That’s the problem with drinking, I thought, as I poured myself a drink. If something bad happens you drink in an attempt to forget; if something good happens you drink in order to celebrate; and if nothing happens you drink to make something happen.”

Now who does this guy remind you of?????

  Kevin Hearne Hits Denver!
And Denver hits right back!!

Last night, UF author Kevin Hearne made his first official author stop at Who Else!Books . His back-to-back releases of three in the Iron Druid Chronicles (the third next month) is garnering reviews and raves. Well, why wouldn't they? Take a look at these covers:

Kevin is not only a great writer, but funny as well! He kept us entertained with his readings, wit, and general good nature--unlike Mario who was his usual...well, you know. Let me show you what I mean.

Here we are on our best behavior...fellow league members sharing a little good will.

Then Mario starts acting up....

And all hell breaks loose.

And Kevin with his family in the audience! (Although I did notice mom and wife snapping away, too. Daughter was trying hard to pretend she didn't know any of us.) Still, all I can say is shame, Mario, shame.

For you Denverites, there are signed copies of Kevin's books available at WhoElse!Books and you can call or stop by to get your very own!

I'll post more pictures of the signing on the League Blog later today.

Well, HEXED is on its way, as is CHICKS KICK BUTT. Preliminary sales have been good and I want to thank you all for that. A little Anna Strong fix before CROSSROADS.

Speaking of which, Crossroads takes place on the Navajo Reservation in Monument Valley. I took a trip there several years ago and fell in love with the area. There are Navajo characters in the book and one thing I didn’t think of while writing it was that when the book is read for audio, the Navajo language would be difficult to deal with. My narrator Dina Pearlman contacted me for help and I had to refer her to the websites I used for translation. But I don't know how much help that will be. So, if there are any Navajo speakers out there, contact me and I’ll put you in touch with her!

I went to the grocery store this afternoon and for the first time, I saw my name on the cover of a book on the racks!!! HEXED was right there! That's fun.

But then I went on Amazon to read some HEXED reviews..I know, I know, I hear the groans out there. And really, I don't usually do this. But there was this from a reviewer:

"Blood Debt" by Stein. One star trash. Gratuitous profanity, then warehouse is misspelled 'wearhouse' and I stopped reading there. Might have gone two pages. I dropped this author's series at book two, and it was obvious she still has no idea about writing.

Okay, I just would like to set the record straight. Wearhouse was not misspelled. It's the name of a business, Men's Wearhouse, which is why it was in caps.

Okay, I've gotten that off my chest. Now I'm never going to read another Amazon review again. EVER.

How goes it in your world?

  Talking (Trailer) Trash
Okay--so that sounded much cleverer in my head then it looks on the page...but I came across trailers for some of my favorite programs--most starting in a month or two--that I thought I'd share. First, though, a word about my birthday trip to Havasu. Thanks to my daughter Jeanette and her significant other, Steve, we had a wonderful time. I took about three hundred pictures but haven't had a chance to go through them. You know how it is with digital cameras...you just keep snapping. I even took some video and if I can figure out how to post those, I will. Thanks to all of you, too, who shared birthday wishes on Facebook. And to my critique group for the cake last night and to Mario for this great book:

Dark Shadows finally gets a synopsis--from cinemablend.com

Johnny Depp has been talking about making a film version of the late 1960s gothic soap opera Dark Shadows for nearly four years. A tale of witches, vampires and other assorted creatures of the night, the project fits in perfectly with Depp's and director Tim Burton's sensibilities, but has taken a long time to actually get made, the two pairing on Sweeney Todd and Alice in Wonderland in the interim. Today the duo's dream is realized.

Warner Bros. has sent out a press release announcing that production on Dark Shadows has begun. Also included in the release is a full plot synopsis and cast list, which includes the previously unannounced Jonny Lee Miller, who will be playing Johnny Depp's bad-seed brother Roger, and Gulliver McGrath, who will be playing Roger's son. The full plot synopsis is below. If you don't wish to know anything about this project, then you probably shouldn't have clicked on this article.

As you can see, I didn't include the spoilers but you can check it out if you're curious...

All I have to say about this next one is hmmmm...I know the economy is bad but you have to be really hard up for a job to let somebody do THIS to you!

By Chris Morran on June 1, 2011 12:15 PM

The job interview process can be quite taxing to the applicant's mind, body and wallet, but at no point should it involve being tied up, flogged and tortured... right?

Authorities in suburban New York have arrested a man who did the above-mentioned things, and more, to men who thought they were applying for high security gigs in the intelligence-gathering industry.

The jobs were fake, but the pain was real.

According to the AP, between 2008 and 2010, a man recruited a handful of men for these imaginary jobs, saying he would help train them for their eventual work overseas. That "training" included stripping them down, whipping them and sticking needles under their fingernails.

Police found a kit in the man's car that included rope, needles, strapping tape... and vegetable oil. No mention of whether it was corn, canola or peanut oil.

The man was arraigned on 29 counts, including assault, criminal impersonation and forcible touching, and ordered held on $250,000 bail.

  Happy St. Pat's

If you're in the Denver area, look for Mario at a pub near you...

However, did you know that there was another March holiday that I suspect explains a lot about Mario?

March 20, coinciding with the first day of spring, is Extraterrestrial Abduction Day. Last year there was a festival in Toronto and websites like this one offer tips on how to avoid being abducted.

Too late for Mario. He always get a little wonky around this time of year. I thought it was spring allergies. Now I know the real reason.

On to some personal stuff. I just got the new cover for Crossroads. Here it is:

You who know my history with covers, know I pretty much hate them all at first sight. No reflection on the artist, who is great, it's just that I have such a definite image of Anna in my head. HOWEVER, this one is the exception. I really like it. How about you?

The second thing is that Whedonistas, the anthology dedicated to Joss Whedon by women writers who are fans (read:fanatics), is now available. The reviews have been good and sales are brisk. I am lucky enough to have a piece in it and I want to take this opportunity to thank my good friend, Maryelizabeth Hart of Mysterious Galaxy. She recommended me to the editors who issued the invitation. If you are interested in purchasing a copy, click the above link and they'll fix you up. Tell them Jeanne sent you.

Also coming is Vampires: The Recent Undead. Release date of March 22 (moved back from an earlier date). I know I've mentioned it before but it has some terrific vampire writers in it. Just check out the list on the cover. I'm definitely the small fish in this pond.

And one last bit of BSP-- Here's the HEXED cover flat:

This one debuts June 11.

On a serious note, what's going on in Japan is a disaster of proportions unfathomable to most of us. The League of Reluctant Adults want to help in some small way so here's what we're doing. We are holding an auction (actually two) on Ebay.

What are we selling?

Get a helpful critique from a group of authors from the League of Reluctant Adults! (Team Claw)

Highest bidder (100% of proceeds go to the Red Cross to help Japan) gets to submit a synopsis and first batch of pages (up to 6000 words between the two - you decide how that works) of any fiction project for "expert analysis" by Team Claw, a group of authors from the League of Reluctant Adults! (We're a group of published authors of urban fantasy, young adult, and paranormal romance; see our blog here

Team Claw members: Sonya Bateman, Michele Bardsley, Carolyn Crane, Kevin Hearne, Jackie Kessler, Diana Rowland, Jeanne Stein

What you get: We'll each commit to taking at least an hour to read your stuff and let you know what we think is working great, and what we think isn't working, and give ideas for improvement. Some members may concentrate more on the synopsis, some on the pages, but we'll all be giving our best constructive advice.

Be ready to get a spectrum of opinions, and possibly disagreement between league members, either noted on the document itself or on separate documents. It'll be like we're all sitting in a room, discussing your story and early pages. You will have six months to submit your document (Microsoft Word ideal), we'll have a month to look it over and comment. (note, this is for craft/story feedback only, and not in any way a guarantee of representation or publication). At the end, we'll email your word doc back, full of all of our comments, either on the document, or on separate documents.

100 % of the final sale price will go to the American Red Cross. Bidding closes on March 22. If you'd like to enter the auction, here's the link

So if you've wondered what you could do to help, consider this. It might be of benefit to you, too.

New Year, New Hair, New Headshot
I have lots of amusing (at least they were to me) videos to share this week-- but first. Mario's post about writing made me think about my own process. I've decided to attempt something new for me-- writing two books at once. The eighth in the Anna Strong series, Haunted, and a stand-alone mystery/thriller. So many of my author friends have two or three series going at once, I feel like a laggard. I'm using Sarah Domet's 90 Days to Your Novel, a Writers Digest book, as a template. I'm on week six. I brought my first plot outline to critique group last night for the mystery and the comments were generally good. (If I didn't get any negative feedback, I'd know they weren't paying attention.) Anyway, I'll post progress reports along the way.

Next, a couple of blatant self-promotion items. Had a new headshot done. I long ago decided I would never let an old headshot be used for my books. I've been shocked too many times by meeting an author I would have mistook for her mother because the picture on her books was at least thirty years old. So, here's the unveiling.

Credits: Photography: Kelly Weaver Photography
Hair and Make-up: Debbie Ritch
Jewelry : David and Diann Wacks

Men have it so easy. Mario can use his shot for as long as he wants. In the many years I've known him, his hair hasn't changed at all--well, except for maybe getting a little thinner and a lot grayer. But basically, he looks the same-- damn him.

So, would you buy a book from this woman?

Just got this yesterday, the cover for the anthology Chicks Kick Butt in which I have a story, Superman. It's an Anna Strong story, actually a peek into the seventh book, Crossroads, as I adapted this story from a scene in that book. It's available for pre-order now from Amazon here .

All four anthologies I have contributed to come out in the next few months:

March -- Whedonistas

Along with Vampires: The Recent Undead

And in June, a novella in Hexed

And the above mentioned Chicks Kick Butt...

One more bit of promo, though this time not for me...our League of Reluctant Adults pal Mark Henry is coming to Denver in honor of his Road Trip of the Living Dead's release in mass market paperback. As Mario put it, he will be reading from his book and generally being inappropriate. The fun begins at 7 PM on February 11 at the Broadway Book Mall.

Okay, now onto the entertainment part of our blog-- (I know, you're sighing in relief. But I don't do this a lot, do I?)

Just mentioned last week that our Buffy turned 30 on January 19th. Well, for once something good came on her birthday...well, more precisely for Sarah Michelle Gellar. Zapit reports:

CBS has ordered a pilot for a new show called Ringer, which is about "a troubled young lass on the run from the mob. She assumes the life of her wealthy twin sister, only to find out that said sibling has a bounty on her head as well". Gellar is set to play the troubled young lass and the sister as double-duty on the new show, according to Vulture.

The pilot was written by Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder, who have evidently worked as writers on Supernatural.

The last issue of Buffy, Season Eight hit the stands last week, too. Go here for a recap (and spoilers). If any of you are following it, what was your reaction to the big shocker?

Okay-- for your viewing pleasure, several nonsensical pieces I came across this week:

My Blackberry Isn't Working-- British humor at it's best

From Police Procedure - only Mario can truly appreciate how drunk this woman is

Heads down-- Perils of the MegaReader

One idea from Flavorwire -- What to Do with Your Books After the Internet Apocalypse

Okay, have I entertained you enough for one week? What's going on in your world?

  News and Views...
Now that Mario and I are Master Bloggers, how I love that, I was relieved to find a few articles of interest for this week's Master Blog. But first, a couple of personal items.

Chosen was nominated by RT Book Reviews Magazine as Best Urban Fantasy Novel for 2010. Competition is keen: MAGIC BLEEDS by Ilona Andrews; TOTAL ECLIPSE by Rachel Caine; DOUBLE CROSS by Carolyn Crane; MOB RULES by Cameron Haley; DUST by JoanFrances Turner.

Win, lose or draw, I'm honored.

Second, HEXED, four novellas by Ilona Andrews, Yasmine Gaenorn, Allyson James and moi, is available now for preorder here :

Here's the back cover blurb about my story:

From national bestselling author Jeanne C. Stein comes "Blood Debt," where bounty-hunter-turned vampire Anna Strong is visited by three witches who ask her to right an old magical wrong. Anna will have to live up to her name to make it through alive...

From Shelf Awareness:

Powell’s Books, Portland, Ore., has purchased 7,000 books from Anne Rice's personal library and set up a dedicated page on its website to sell them, the Oregonian reported.

Powell's From the Library of Anne Rice section notes that the collection includes "editions signed or annotated by Ms. Rice, and many have her library markings on the spines. The collection showcases her love of literature and writing and reveals a true intellectual curiosity--classic philosophy, the Brontes, biblical archaeology, and Louisiana history are just a few of the subject areas represented."

From Shelf Awareness:

New Zealand officials agreed to a deal "under which they will contribute special financing and introduce labor legislation" to discourage Warner Brothers and Peter Jackson from taking the production of the two movies adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit out of the country.

The New York Times reported that the agreement came "after a week in which thousands of New Zealand film workers had taken to the streets in a push to save The Hobbit--and much of New Zealand's film industry with it--while others questioned whether its politicians had gone too far in kowtowing to Hollywood."

Meet Deaver: Jeffery Deaver, author of the next Bond novel

From USA Today :

Best known for his thrillers starring quadriplegic criminalist Lincoln Rhyme, Deaver has a new mission: Bring Bond into the 21st century in a new 007 novel.

The yet-to-be-named book is cryptically referred to as "Project X" by Ian Fleming Publications Ltd., which owns the rights to Fleming's work…

"The novel," he says, "is set in the present day, in 2011. Bond is a young agent for the British secret service. He's 29 or 30 years old, and he's an Afghan war vet."

That in itself is big news. After all, if Bond were aging in real time — he first appeared in Fleming's Casino Royale n 1953 — the now doddering (although assuredly still handsome) 007 would be nearly 90.

A very cool idea:

Ever wonder what it would be like to hang out with Frankenstein? U Star Novels offers "a range of romantic novels that are fully personalized to include up to 30 of your personal details, making you and your partner the stars of your very own novel....

With U Star Personalized Classics, the plot remains the same, the only thing that changes is that it could be you following the yellow brick road, or your brother hunting vampires in the darkest depths of Transylvania, or your best friend starring in one of the best-loved romances of all time alongside her own Mr. Darcy!"

---

A novel Christmas present perhaps....

# # # #

And a special congratulations to Julie Kazimer, one of our Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers buddies, on her first book sale:

J.A. Kazimer's F***ED UP FAIRYTALE, pitched as "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" meets "Shrek" when Cinderella is run over by a bus and a private investigator (on mental health leave from the Villains Union) is hired by her not-so-ugly stepsister to solve what she believes is a murder and break her own curse before New Never City is riddled with dead bodies, to Peter Senftleben at Kensington, in a nice deal, in a two-book deal, by Sharon Belcastro at Belcastro Agency (World).

Always a nice thing to celebrate!!

# # # #

From Deadline.com

Fox is out with a new trailer for its big Christmas film, the Jack Black-starrer Gulliver's Travels which gets released December 22:

# # # #

Huffington Post readers chose "7 Movies That Are Better Than the Book."

See if you agree and feel free to add your own.

# # # #

In the sure sign of the impending Apocalypse file:

'Hobbit' Money Sought as MGM Files for Bankruptcy ....

Hollywood studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., the home of James Bond, filed for bankruptcy protection on Wednesday in a plan that had the backing of its lenders and put funding of its half of "The Hobbit" back on track.

Yikes.

# # # #

So, who's doing NaNoWriMo? I've logged in 7500 words--but I know I can't keep up this pace. Just trying to get ahead of the game...
