Welcome to Biting-Edge, a blog shared by authors and vampire experts, Mario Acevedo and Jeanne Stein. We’ll cover urban fantasy, vampires, pop culture, and all things Joss Whedon. Unlike other fantasy blogs, we don’t insist on body cavity searches (unless you ask politely). Snarkiness is most welcome...though we won't promise not to bite back!

Long times in the literary saddle.
Mario here:

Another con bites the dust. Specifically, MileHiCon 43, Denver's nexus for science fiction and fantasy literature since the 60's.

This year I was honored to be the Toastmaster, which gave me the opportunity to meet and introduce the Guests of Honor, from left, GoH Author Vernor Vinge, GoH Editor Gardner Dozior, GoH Author Glen Cook, and GoH Artist Theresa Mather. The lengthy and impressive résumés of each of these GoH's humbled me and my modest accomplishments. Much thanks to Rose Beetem for the invitation.

Besides the usual gang of suspects stalking the bar--among them Betsy Dornbusch, Jeanne Stein, Warren Hammond, Carol Berg, Carrie Vaughn, Bree Ervin, and David Boop, we had the über hipsters, Jason Heller (left, of the forthcoming Taft 2012) and Eytan Kollin (he and his brother Dani co-wrote the award-winning The Unincorporated Man).

At one panel I queried the audience about their thoughts regarding ebooks and e-readers. Interestingly, every reader who commented stated they enjoyed using an e-reader (Kindle, Nook, or iPad). They cited the ease of ordering a new book, the ability to browse through sample chapters, and the convenience of carrying dozens of titles in the e-reader for travel and vacation. None of them preferred a paper copy over an ebook and said that owning an ebook would not prevent them from buying a traditional paper copy as for a personal library. When I told fans that my next books may come exclusively as ebooks, none expressed any resentment.

Stay tuned.

Fun to see you there as always!

I wanted to mention that being in the company of men like Glen Cook and Vernor Vinge who have HUNDREDS of books and stories to their credit is humbling.

Yes, I was there, too, though Mario seems to have forgotten (or at least he didn't mention me in the gang of usual suspects.)

What a great event! I remember when i used to attend every year while still living in Colorado. I miss that. *sniff*

Betsy: It ain't a con without you.
Karen: Maybe next year?
Jeanne: Ack! How could I not mention the person who tormented me all weekend. The omission has been corrected.

One year ago I scoffed at e-readers. Then I got talked into buying one so I wouldn't have to carry so many books on my trip to India.Tthe color Nook came into my life and that was the end of print. The only print books I have obtained since are signed copies (I still go to signings, and if I go to signings I feel compelled to buy), books from Amazon UK that have not been released in the US and some going out of business stuff at Borders. Once you go e-book you don't want to go back, and I was dragged kicking and screaming to e-books. So I can't say I'd have any objection to buying your next book e only. Unless you were scheduled to come to University Bookstore (yes, I know, and I was there) I'd be buying it e anyway (probably at 2 in the morning while curled up in my bed, the very bestest time and place to shop).

Viva la E!

In my fictional perfect world the e-book would be a bonus for pre-ordering the new release hardbound or trade size paperback. Perhaps a $1 or $2 extra if waiting to pre-order the mass market paperback.
Yes, my travel packing is at least a pound per day lighter thanks to my Nook, but nothing will supersede the joy of a new book in my hands.
If e-books mean having more adventures with favorite characters, and their creators making more money - bring it!
