Welcome to Biting-Edge, a blog shared by authors and vampire experts, Mario Acevedo and Jeanne Stein. We’ll cover urban fantasy, vampires, pop culture, and all things Joss Whedon. Unlike other fantasy blogs, we don’t insist on body cavity searches (unless you ask politely). Snarkiness is most welcome...though we won't promise not to bite back!

Valentines and The Year of the TIger
Another of those slow news weeks. Lost is back (want to bet who Sayid has become?)and I like that. I’m working on book seven which now has the working title Crossroads (thanks critique group) and the edits for Chosen are in the bag.

One other little bit of trivia: All five books in the Anna Strong series are available today at Audible books. The narrator is Dina Pearlman. If you’d like a sample, click here.

You can’t make this stuff up. Seems there’s a prize for everything. The Bookseller magazine has announced the longest ever longlist for its annual Diagram prize for the oddest book title of the year. A few examples: Bondage for Beginners, the Origin of Faeces (which is the British word for yes—you guessed it—feces), and my personal favorite, Father Christmas Needs a Wee. Click here for more.

Another friend with a debut book—Shannon Baker and Ashes of the Red Heifer. If you are in the Denver area, she will be at Who Else Books on Feb 20. The address is 200 So. Broadway, Denver, CO 80203, 303-744-2665. Time for the signing will be 3 PM. Carol Berg and Janet Fogg will also be signing. Let’s turn out and make Shannon’s first signing one to remember.

So what are you doing for Valentine’s Day? Which happens to coincide with the Chinese New Year. Year 4708. Which happens to be more interesting to me than wine and roses and chocolate—well, maybe not more interesting than chocolate. But close. Anyway, regardless of what you’re celebrating, any plans?

Comments:
Hi Jeanne. weather permitting, my husband and I will likely go out Saturday, as his birthday also falls during the following week. We will probably do dinner and a movie.

How about you?

Don't know yet, Carol. Probably the same as you. After 35 Valentine Days, we've run out of new ideas... :-)

J.

That audio is so awesome. She even sounds blonde. A very dangerous one.

The plans:
Take Lady K to Build a Bear on Saturday to get her Valentine Dalmatian she saw on TV (of course, she wants everything she sees on NickJr commercials)

Sunday we will all go to Papadeaux Seafood Kitchen for the fab Sunday brunch. Yum....
DH wants a camping heater and I have my purse I wanted from Marshalls and a very warm fleece vest from Cabelas. Nothing says love like a purse, camping heater, and fleece!

Vickie, sounds like a very nice way to spend the day!

Well, the tot and the hubby have her schools daddy-daugther dance on Friday.

The hubby is making me something, but the last homemade gift was an iron demon stake, so it's all good. LOL. He axed my idea for his gift, so all I have for him right now is a card and a chocolate fish.

Crossroads, I like it.

Oh, I won a prize over at the RomCon board. Thanks for posting the link.

Suzanne-- congrats on your prize and I'm envious of a husband who would make you an iron demon stake!!! He's a keeper!

I hope the tot and hubby have lots of fun at the dance. Tell them to be careful coming home-- keep an eye out for the things that go bump...

J.

Thanks. I'm recovering from a bug, too. Blech. The hubby made the tot french fries for dinner, lol.

Any advice for speaking on panels? My steampunk panel for the RWA national conference in July got approved and I'm a little nervous, lol.

Hey, thanks for the mention of the new book. Just so you know, Mario, Jeanne and I can both be dangerous, too. Not necessarily a blonde thing, but...

Suzanne asked: any advice for speaking on panels? My best advice is do your homework. Have notes on plenty of books to be examples of steampunk. Do you have a moderator? Email the moderator and ask for the questions he/she plans to ask. Most good moderators will get in touch with you first, but alas, not all moderators are good. Most important--relax and have fun!!!

J.

Damn right we can be dangerous, Shannon!! Mario knows that better than anyone, too, don't you, Mario??

J.

Jeanne, we haven't gotten our moderator yet. we can still request. Maybe we can get a good one, lol. I feel like the little kid on the pannel--it's an agent, 2 award winning authors, an a blogger (me, lol). I'll make sure to have lots of books and examples. We've been reviewing a bunch on the steampunk group blog. Thank you!

I forgot to add congrats for getting a panel at RWA-- no easy feat!!

J.

Thanks. :) The person who actually wrote the proposal did a brilliant job. I'm so stoked. I was sure someone else with "better" speakers would get approved insetad of us. We're just the "Steamed Lolitas" lol. Now I just have to get us all to Nashville. The tot and the hubby want to go, too (oh, and the tot was pink sparkly boots and a pink, furry cowboy hat).
