Welcome to Biting-Edge, a blog shared by authors and vampire experts, Mario Acevedo and Jeanne Stein. We’ll cover urban fantasy, vampires, pop culture, and all things Joss Whedon. Unlike other fantasy blogs, we don’t insist on body cavity searches (unless you ask politely). Snarkiness is most welcome...though we won't promise not to bite back!

  Seventh Inning Stretch
Okay, I’ll admit I had to stretch for something to write about today. I’ve got a couple of interesting things, like the first page of Jackie Kessler’s Tales of the Vampire—Carpe Noctem. From mtv.com:

Cool, huh?

Then the big reveal that got leaked:

It’s been a strange week to be Joss Whedon. While the writer, beloved amongst sci-fi fans for his personality-driven genre shows like "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and "Firefly," was wrapping production on the series finale of his Fox show "Dollhouse," word hit the web, spoiling a major plot point in his long-running "Buffy Season 8" comic series published through Dark Horse.

I won’t say anymore than that. If you’re following the comic and you don’t want to know, don’t click here.

And Barnes & Noble is going to offer textbook rental to students.

From BusinessWire :

Students Can Rent Online And Have It Shipped Or Stop by Their Barnes & Noble Campus Store

Barnes & Noble College has made the program easy for students, enabling them to rent their textbooks from the comfort of their dorm or home simply by logging into their campus bookstore’s e-commerce site. They can also rent from their campus Barnes & Noble bookstore. This innovative rental program gives students the added flexibility of paying for their rentals using any form of tender, including campus debit cards and student financial aid…

Rentals are just the newest addition to the list of options Barnes & Noble College is offering students, including digital, loose leaf, custom, new, used, and unbundled textbooks. “We’ve always been about providing our students with convenient, cost-saving textbook options. We think our rental program does just that and has the additional benefit of providing an online solution,” said Roberts.

It’s about time.

But honestly, that’s about it. So to fill up some space, I thought I’d share some of my favorite pics of 2009. I don’t know if the blog will let me post so many pictures, but here goes nothing.

Comments:
You mean no news about the new Firefly movie? And the tie in anthology? Seriously, Jeanne. *pout* (Just kidding about the pouting)

How'd the writers retreat go?

I switched editing projects so I didn't go insanse. Making good progress on this one, then back to the other. My fingers are itching to write tho, lol.

The tot and the teen got chickens--yes, chickens. The hubby helped them build a little coop and everything. Right now it's so cold and windy that the little chicks are inside, next to my desk, cheeping away. Tomorrow they go visit the tot's school for show and tell.

Hey Suzanne-- I was saving the Firefly stuff for next week. Nice of you to do a teaser ;-)

Glad your edits aren't driving you insane Having something to switch off on every once in awhile helps. Remember Robert Heinlein's rules for writing:

1. You must write.
2. You must finish what you write.
3. You must refrain from rewriting, except to editorial order.
4. You must put the work on the market.
5. You must keep the work on the market until it is sold.

THEN back to rule one!!!

Chickens? Sounds like a photo op to me!!

J.

Oh Firefly stuff? I'll be looking for that next week then :)

*waves* hey guys. Do the insanity of last semester calmed down just enough for my computer to crash :( Now I have my computer and SOME calm back just in time for it to get hairy again.

I heard about the leak but I've convinced myself (for once) to not give into spoilers. It's one thing to give into spoilers when you will only find out the next week anyway, however, when you only get a few minutes of reading before having to wait for another month ... I do not want any spoilers ruined since I've earned every surprise he might throw my way :p Also, graduate school insanity let me with no time to pick up the latest issues so I have a stack of reading accumulating at the comic shop.

Also on a side note ... Therion shirt! and the Daughter of Anarchy look suits you ;)

Oh and New Years Resolution? Mine was to try and up my schedule a bit so that I'm not pulling true all nighters (no sleep) and virtual all nighters (2-3 hours of sleep) for almost a month at the end of the semester just so I can get stuff done in time. Also - to minimize interview transcriptions as much as possible this semester. I can't do a whole lot about the second one (I am doing Public History after all) but hopefully I can succeed in the first one. Only time will tell.

Hi Jeanne. It's great to see the Dragon*Con pics in there!

Leia--I have nightmares about my computer crashing...course I have a MAC and that doesn't happen, does it? wow, am I tempting fate or what? BUT I do have my stuff backed up on an external drive AND one of those storage spaces in the sky.

Good luck on the resolutions. I didn't even make any this year. I remember the all-nighters. I was young then. They would kill me now.

J.

Oh, Carol, it was tough choosing pics. I just kind of went through and grabbed the first ones that caught my eye. I hope I will be taking more at D*Con this year but since I still haven't heard anything, I'm not sure!

XO J.

SECOND Firefly movie?! that's so awesome!!

I miss out on all the good news *pout*

Thankin' you for including Lady K in the pics line up. She had her first school production last night, Stone Soup. She was a grumpy townsperson. Posted a couple of pics on my blog. She had a great time and wants to be a singer now or a schoolteacher or a ballerina.

I do hope there's something to that new Firefly flick. Would luh-huv that.

Had a semi me day yesterday and went to see Sherlock Holmes at the show. Excellent flick! Highly recommend.

CLJ-- don't feel alone. I often miss out on things. I used to subscribe to whedoninfo.com but it became so full of pop-ups (some of which I could NEVER find my way out of) I gave up.
Now I depend on other sites and my friends to keep me up to date!!

J.

Lady K a grumpy townsperson??? Certainly not type casting!

J.

Jeanne, the only reason I didn't freak out TOO much was that I had backed everything up on an external HD that I had bought for the first time maybe five months earlier. It just meant that I was stuck without a CD drive for a while and had to type my final papers up on a netbook. And by the way? Netbooks are perhaps God's gift to mankind. They are small enough that they don't seem like a production to tote around, and they don't have space for much on then so you pretty much HAVE to work and it's harder to get distracted.

As for all nighters? They may be a badge of honor of sorts, but they are something I could certainly live without.

Vickie - Lady K's goals sound about the same as mine when I was her age. What do her talents lead you to think she might pursue? As always, she is as cute as a button.

Vickie, those are all great professions. The tot still wants to be a mermaid doctor and marry a vampire, lol.

Leia, I feel you. I had my hard drive crash about two years ago, and even though I'd backed it all up about a week and a half before, I lost *alot* of stuff that I still haven't recreated.

Jeanne, I love Heinlein's rules and quote them all the time now. But I didn't know about them until you posted them in your fab UF class I took online about a year and a half ago. That was a fun class. :)

So the tot's chick died and she was heartbroken. It was so very sad. We got her another, but she seems hesitent to get attached to it. Sigh. Poor tot.

~Suzi

Oh, I am so sorry about the tot's chick! At least it didn't grow up and end up on your dinner table like a duckling I had when I was growing up. Of course, my parents didn't tell me it was the same duck...in fact, I didn't even know I was eating duck. I thought I was eating chicken and my duck flew away. This is one of the things parents admit to their kids when they're grown up and think it doesn't matter anymore...

It does.

*perk* Firefly movie? now that's what I'm talkin' about...

Oh -- hey Jeanne -- somebody quoted this on their blog --

“Passion, it lies in all of us, sleeping…waiting…and though unwanted…unbidden…it will stir…open its jaws and howl.”

Joss Whedon (American Screenwriter, Producer)

Hey Gina-- don't get too excited about a new Firefly movie. Sadly.

Love the quote!!!!

J.

Leia: Lady K loves to draw and sing. Her imagination is pretty boundless, thankfully.

Suzanne: {HUGS} to tot!
I love her ambitions for her future as a mermaid doctor and finding a nice vampire to settle down with.
