Welcome to Biting-Edge, a blog shared by authors and vampire experts, Mario Acevedo and Jeanne Stein. We’ll cover urban fantasy, vampires, pop culture, and all things Joss Whedon. Unlike other fantasy blogs, we don’t insist on body cavity searches (unless you ask politely). Snarkiness is most welcome...though we won't promise not to bite back!

  Jeanne's Fall Break

I woke up this morning with three things on my mind—

1. It was cold in the bedroom. Feels like fall. Days of sleeping with the windows open are over.

2. Got to get ready for my trek tomorrow up to Fairplay for the semi-annual writers’ retreat. Three days of nothing but writing and eating. What’s not to love?

3. It’s the first day of October—where has the year gone?

Wait. It’s October 1st. It’s THURSDAY October 1st.

Thursday.

I don’t have a blog…how could I not have a blog? I’ve been doing this for a couple of years. How could Thursday have snuck up on me so completely that I forgot to do a blog?

Am I getting old?

Who am I kidding? I AM old. Mario reminds me of that all the time.

Have I been so busy working on a new project that an old one like the blog slipped my memory?

No. In fact, I kind of took September off from writing to recover from travel and the travails of a book release.

So what’s my excuse?

I don’t have one. Just like I don’t have a blog for this week. So I’m going to do what every good slacker worth her salt would do—I’m going to turn it back on YOU.

So—I’m giving you all an assignment. Tell me what interesting things caught your attention this week. Reviews of new fall shows. Books you read. Something in the newspaper. A trip to see fall color. Have you had a good writing week? How many words/pages did you write?

The stage is yours. Let’s consider this like Jeanne’s blog vacation week. You furnish the subjects and we’ll all comment.

Oh, I do have one thing to mention. Monday Mario is the featured artist at Denver’s First Monday Art Talk. For you locals, it will be a chance to see how truly gifted this guy is. Since he never reads MY blog entries, I can say with certainty that he won’t find out I paid him such a complement. And if you tell him that I said it, I’ll deny it. Anyway, follow this Westword Link for details and a map.

Now have at it….write the blog!

Comments:
Saturday morning I sat down and wrote my short story installment for October. Being the wonderful editor that my editor is, she had it back to me Monday afternoon. My "official" post date being the last day of the previous month, I tend to end up posting them a day or two beforehand.
She saves me a lot of headache.
I've been trying to work on my novel, but the inspiration just hasn't been there lately. My preoccupation with transferring from a Blogger blog to a self-hosted Wordpress blog has nearly exhausted all of my reserves. But hey, it's for the better. Sleep is a small price to pay for a web site that's integrated seamlessly into my blog; looks more professional.
There has also been a sudden rebirth of interest in getting my car back on the road. I bought a new engine, transmission, and have been Scrooging it up on the other parts I need to get it running. My wife has taught me over the years to become quite the bargain shopper.
The NPR Three-Minute Fiction contest I entered last month didn't get me anywhere. Oh well, it was my first writing contest. Doesn't mean anything. There will be others.
Yes, I've been getting a lot done, but not as much on the writing front as I would like. I could use a writer's retreat.

Have fun in Fairplay. That sounds a lovely time.
No big revelations or anything this week. Sunday was recovery from Saturday's elk hunting trip. You can see pics of Lady K in camo and on the hunt with her daddy on my blog. = )
Then she got sick Tues and Wed. Some kind of ick she found somewhere that put her down for the count.
DH and I have been busy with training for upcoming satellite fun, so this week has been full of not so much fun. We did get dinner at Olive Garden tonight as Lady K is feeling so much perkier. She chowed on pasta fagiole (sp?) and spaghetti, so the ick is gone.
And Monsters vs Aliens is out on DVD so all is right with the world.

John-- it's why I love these retreats. For at least two weekends a year, I don't have to think about anything but my next project.

Don't get discouraged about the contest. I NEVER had luck with contests. The important thing is to keep writing!!

thanks for sharing.

J.

Hey Vickie-- an elk hunt???? She is so cute!!!

Glad to hear Lady K is on the mend. Pasta Fagole is my favorite Olive Garden treat, too.

Since it's supposed to be cold this weekend, perfect timing for the movie!

J.

What I remember is that you forgot that it was your turn to blog.

Hey Jeannie, this has been one heck of a week here. We've moved and I can't find anything and it's driving me crazy. My job is being elimintated by corporate so I will be gone by the end of Oct. My ms was rejected by an editor, which made me cry harder than loosing my job. I understand why it was rejected, but it doesn't make me feel better, lol.

Sigh.

I'll just keep wiriting, apply for new jobs, and I think I'm going to apply to some PhD programs. But the idea of taking the GREs, filling out apps, and getting those letters of rec are daunting. Yeah, not looking forward to the GREs, lol, and I've been out of school for seven years, who's going to write me a letter, lol? Will Harvard accept one from my dance teacher? How about the tot's imaginary Vampire, Bobo, LOL. I could just imagine that one, lol...

Happy Weekend.

~Suzanne

Mario-- You actually read my blog???? OMG--

J.

PS I didn't mean any of the nice things I said about you.

Really.

J.

Suzanne-- Anna will write you a letter.

J.

Thanks :)
This has been a rough week. I actually thought yesterday was Wednesday, lol. I need a nice happy book to read on the airplane. The tot and I are going to grandmas for her birthday (Bobo too. He bounces, flies, and sucks popcorn out of his fangs, lol).

Wait -- did I read that correctly? The tot is friends with Bobo the Vampire?

Bobo the Clown is going to sue.

yes, though last night Bobo morphed into a vampire giraffe who eats people and swims in blood...

Jeanne, I just finished Retribution, I started it on the plane. Man, oh, man, that was some good stuff. I can't wait for the next one. The tot "read" it outloud to me as well, I don't remember red shoes and carniverous giraffes when I read it the first time...

Hi Jeanne. I highly recommend On the Edge by Ilona Andrews.

I am trying to get through my stack of books for review so I can rea Retribution.

Oh, and we are awaiting the birth of grandchild/grandson #2 any moment now...

Suzanne said: The tot "read" it outloud to me as well, I don't remember red shoes and carniverous giraffes when I read it the first time...

Damn-- I wish I'd thought of that!

try to have some fun with grandma and leave the job, school, rejection stuff behind. When you get back to your new home, it will be a new beginning.

Just keep writing.

You aren't leaving SoCal are you?

J.

Hi Carol-- I've heard good things about that book.

Congrats on your new grand-baby to be!

J.

Hi Jeanne! The hubbys family in hawaii thinks we should move there. We probably won't lol. We'll probably be in SoCal forever, lol, even tho I hate it. I'll just find a new job as always. His work is in SoCal and I can't see him leaving the movie biz. But he did say that if I got into the PhD program at Harvard we'd move...(he doesn't think I can get in, lol. I guess I should get my butt in gear, study for those GMATs and get those letters of rec and prove him wrong, right?) Not sure I'd even like the east coast, lol. But I did survive a year in Austria...

Course I don't want you to leave, Suzanne, but I have a personal reason. I like seeing you once in awhile! There could be worse places than HI, though.

J.

Well you know, you'd just have to come speak to the RWA chapter on Ohau and maybe do a signing at the Alamoana mall, maybe hit the Maui writers conference while you're out there...I see possibilities...LOL

The tot thinks I should be a dolphin trainer. LOL. I always wanted to be the girl who performs with Shamu.

I agree with the tot-- being a dolphin trainer would be very cool!!
