What happens in Bubonicon...
...stays in Bubonicon.
Mario here:
Just got back from BuboniCon 41 in Albuquerque. Needless to say, I had a blast. More on that.
But first,
Go-Go Girls of the Apocalypse. Because of my titles like the
Nymphos of Rocky Flats,
X-Rated Bloodsuckers, etc., people kept telling me to read
Go-Go Girls. I finally met the author
Victor Gischler earlier this month in Austin and he signed a copy for me. As expected, Victor was a thoroughly cool guy, rating a full
TEN points on the
Biting Edge Hipster-O-Meter. On my flight to Albuquerque, I finished
Go-Go Girls and was blown away. I'd give it this blurb:
Deliverance meets Sin City!
Now for the news on Bubonicon 41.
Though this is one of the smaller Sci-Fi/Fantasy cons, it's by no means lacking in talent and prestige. Among the writers,
George R. R. Martin,
Daniel Abraham,
Jane Lindskold,
Carrie Vaughn, and many more. I got to sponge screenwriting wisdom from
Melinda Snodgrass and the Guest of Honor,
Michael Cassutt. These writers' credits include
Star Trek TNG,
Beverly Hills 90210,
Twilight Zone,
Stargate SG-1, The Outer Limits, and several novels.
Being a fantasy con, there was a cavalcade of awesome costumes.
Randi suffered a wardrobe malfunction when her bloomers accidentally fell.
Steampunk couture was well-represented by Patricia.
She not only made her outfit, but also this dangerous-looking gun and a fantastic necklace from vintage wristwatches.
Tauni as HoMinie, whose naughty hijinks got her kicked out of wizard school.
In her Sunday civilian clothes, Tamara, Saturday night's mistress of mayhem. She's got a manuscript sitting on an editor's desk so let's all send her maximum mo-jo for good luck!
New Mexico is home to America's most famous UFO incidents so it's no surprise to find this out-of-the-world coffee shop.
