Welcome to Biting-Edge, a blog shared by authors and vampire experts, Mario Acevedo and Jeanne Stein. We’ll cover urban fantasy, vampires, pop culture, and all things Joss Whedon. Unlike other fantasy blogs, we don’t insist on body cavity searches (unless you ask politely). Snarkiness is most welcome...though we won't promise not to bite back!

Let’s get some personal news out of the way first…

Tomorrow, Thursday the 11th, I’ll be participating in a Pod cast radio show —At 3PM Eastern. Jeaniene Frost, Rachel Vincent, Jenna Black, Patrice Michelle and I will be discussing first books in a series with Eos Executive Editor, Diana Gill. Here’s the link:
And you can call in with a question on: 347.826.9684

AND, I found out Friday that I’ve been nominated for a Romantic Times Readers Choice Award—well, actually, Anna has been nominated. Best Urban Fantasy Protagonist! Here’s my competition:
Mercy Thompson - IRON KISSED - Patricia Briggs - Ace (Jan.)
Joanne Baldwin - GALE FORCE - Rachel Caine - Roc (Aug.)
Cat Crawfield - ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE - Jeaniene Frost - Avon (May)
Sookie Stackhouse - FROM DEAD TO WORSE - Charlaine Harris - Ace (May)
Daunuan - HOTTER THAN HELL - Jackie Kessler - Zebra (Aug.)
Anna Strong - LEGACY - Jeanne C. Stein - Ace (Sep.)

Could it be any stiffer??? The good thing is that just being a nominee among those stars makes me feel like a winner.

Now, onto the regularly scheduled program.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard went on sale last week. The Guardian reported that "Harry Potter fans (flew) into London from as far afield as New Zealand in order to get their hands on J.K. Rowling's new book . . . as early as possible."

The Guardian dubbed Rowling's slender volume "the most eagerly anticipated title of the year, with a worldwide print run of almost eight million copies."

Beedle the Bard was not originally intended for mass-market release, with Rowling handwriting and illustrating six copies last year as personal gifts for those most closely connected to the Harry Potter books over the last 17 years. A seventh copy was given to the CHLG, and auctioned at Sotheby's in London, where Amazon acquired it for £1.95m.

In other Rowling news, from Shelf Awareness: Harry Potter and the Revised Lexicon. Steven Vander Ark, whose Harry Potter Lexicon was barred from publication by a federal judge in September, said RDR Books will publish the unauthorized guide to J.K. Rowling's seven novels on January 12. The Associated Press (via USA Today) reported that Vander Ark claims "the revised version meets specifications for such a book laid out in the judge's ruling."

From the Whedonverse:

True Blood DVD is not scheduled until May of next year. YIKES!!! And the price, $59.99!! Double YIKES!!!

In a TV Guide Toughest Action Hero Poll, Buffy came in #2 to MacGyver… Huh????
Anyway, here’s the list:

1. MacGyver
2. Buffy The Vampire Slayer
3. Jack Bauer (24)
4. Sydney Bristow (Alias)
5. Magnum PI

Christian Kane, Angel alum Lindsey McDonald, is starring in the new action program, Leverage—looks different with all that hair!! Watched the first episode—liked it. Anyone else?

James Marsters is the voice of Captain Argus in the animated Clone Wars TV series starting on December 5th on the Cartoon network. Love the voice, but love those cheekbones more.

Dr. Horrible made #4 on Time Magazine’s Best of Everything for 2008

In their own words: The writers’ strike, which began in November 2007, was the worst thing to happen to TV in 2008. But the best thing to come of it was this eccentric, tragicomic musical, which — like the strike itself — helped redefine what could be called "TV." Conceived as a strike-time diversion by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), it starred Neil Patrick Harris as the title character, a would-be supervillain applying for membership in the exclusive Evil League of Evil. Whedon released it online, where it became an iTunes smash and inspired a deluge of homemade Evil League of Evil application-videos by fans. Cramming hilarity, heartbreak and high notes into a half-hour, it reminded us that no labor dispute can keep a genius from using his powers for Evil, and for good.

And remember, you can preorder a copy on Amazon now!

An amusing look (if you aren't one of the writers that took a class in how to write the perfect query) at said new improved query letter from an agent’s prospective: Recently, funny things have been happening in my slush pile. I find myself receiving well-written, correctly formatted, professional-looking query letters from bad writers. Imagine my chagrin: one minute I'm intrigued by a smoothly crafted query letter, the next I'm staring down at a crackpot writing sample. For a literary agent who receives some 5,000 queries a year, this is a disastrous turn of affairs. I feel like those European naturalists who first set eyes on the platypus. Suddenly, nothing is easily classified.

Read the rest of Stephen Barbara’s post here…and writer’s beware! The story has to be as well written as the query!

From the You Know Things Are Bad in Publishing When: editors are encouraged to open a can of tuna for lunch. The Observer undertook a survey of cutbacks on lunchtime expenses in publishing. HarperCollins and Random House are eating less expensively. (At RH, "some supervisors were recently given guidelines indicating how much employees should tip and which restaurants near the company's midtown headquarters are thrifty enough to do business in. While the guidelines were advisory, the message was clear.")

How cool is this? Follow the link to a video of my editor’s dad on the Colbert Report! Nicholas Wade is attempting to clone a mastodon. He also has a book out, Before the Dawn: Recovering the Lost
History of Our Ancestors. The focus is on studying DNA to understand our prehistory.

Since he publishes with Penguin, I asked Jessica if she was his editor. She just laughed.

Here’s what I promised last week:

Mario’s painting.

I love it. Leia, thanks for your efforts to reproduce it last week. Mario happened to have a jpg so that made it a lot easier!!

And Vamprowler’s paperweight. This is one of my favorite desk toys. I talk to it, fondle it, curse at it...you understand. It's a face.

I think that may be it for this week. We’ve got snow on the ground. I guess winter is close. Are you ready for the holidays?

Comments:
@Jeanne:
On that list of your competition I haven't read any of them, although I just recently read the first Sookie Stackhouse book and I will confess something --

I like Anna Strong MUCH better. I like Anna Strong's world better. So I'm really rooting for you.

I haven't decided if I'll read any more Sookie but I need to go buy The Watcher and read it.

I did get curious enough to find True Blood streaming video online and give it a watch since I don't get HBO. So far it's fairly faithful to the book and the acting is superb. A bit oversexed IMHO.

And I bought two copies of Beedle the Bard this weekend!

P.S. -- No I am NOT ready for the holidays. I am scrambling to complete a family cookbook my mom and I have been working on all year for gifts, which is taking time away from everything else (including my lamented attempt at NaNoWriMo.)

Maybe if I get the tree up this weekend it will help. But I'm not much in the mood for it this year.

Congratulations on the nomination! You are in very good company, or Anna is.
I will still buy True Blood when it comes out on DVD. I'll start saving my pennies now.
Will now have to find The Clone Wars. Have a serious crush on James Marsters.
Watched Leverage last night and loved it! Got my husband hooked on it too. He's a Buffy and Angel fan and thought casting 'Lindsey' was a good call. Me too....le sigh...
Buffy is second to no one! Especially in Action hero-ness!
Love the alien rock.

Hey Gina-- that family cookbook sounds cool. I don't plan to put up a tree this year at all. We'll be spending both Christmas Eve and Day with friends so why bother...Does that make me sound like a scrooge? I guess in reality, I am.

How many words did you write in Nov? I always think I'm going to do the novel in a month thing, then I never do.

J.

Hi Vickie-- watched the second episode of Leverage just a few minutes ago. I liked it as much as the first. Good cast. Good action and of course, there's Christian. I love his voice. Sexy.

J.

@Jeanne:
Shamefully, I stopped the NaNovel right around 5,000 words. I was picking up an old story I'd started and then got bogged down rethinking the plot. Now I still want to keep working on it.

The cookbook project is pretty cool -- my mom culled through 100 years of handwritten recipes to find those unique recipes that were meaningful, and she's has been writing recollections of why they are important. We've got 96 recipes in the first release of the cookbook. There are a few left -- recipes my mom remembers but nobody ever wrote down, so she's researching them. Then phase 2 will be recipes just for my mom and I -- for our households.

I've typed everything up and am compiling a copy for all the wimminfolk. It's one of those recipe collection binder things, not a fancy print job.

Christmas. Just not feeling jolly yet.

Bloody Mario, why does he have to be so freaking multi-talented?! *grumbles* ;-)

Re the alien: I don't think I'd feel comfortable with a face on my desk. Just sits there, staring at you, judging you... *shudder*

Have a lovely day! :-)

I have a Devil Duck on my desk. His name is Herman and he sings to me.

Tez said: Re the alien: I don't think I'd feel comfortable with a face on my desk. Just sits there, staring at you, judging you... *shudder*

Oh no, no, no... Alien doesn't judge--she encourages! She has a very sympathetic look about her. She's inspiration NOT condemnation (even when I'm surfing instead of writing.)

J.

PS I'll bet it's balmy and warm where you are, isn't it??? I'm jealous.

Gina said: I have a Devil Duck on my desk. His name is Herman and he sings to me.

See, you get it!!! :-)

J (who just looked around for HER devil duck...now where did he go???)

Congrats, Jeanne and Anna. Liking Leverage too so far. Of course, I (ahem) have always had a thing for Timothy Hutton ;). And my inner scrooge is jealous that you don't have to put up a tree. I have to keep him well repressed or the children would revolt; more than they already are that is.

{subliminal message: come to NYCC, come to NYCC, come to NYCC}

Hugs, Krystn

$60!?! for *6* episodes? That DVD had better have some killer extras.

The real painting looks so much better than the results of my meager efforts. I didn't even know that it had writing on it! Nice painting Mario.

Vamp - the paperweight is beyond adorabe. It even sparkles!

* adorable

@ Jeanne & Gina - I don't have anythign on my desk, but i have a teddy bear that find his way around the house. He's usually the very menaing of comfort but when I'm putting of an art piece that I should be working on (and replacing it with Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind or Knights of the Old Republic II) Teddy sits there with a look of condemnation on his face, chastising me for being lax.

Concerning the J.K. Rowling book I'm more excited about the binding of the original work than I am about the reprint. Though for a mere $100 I think amazon sells a special edition that is leather bound and takes some efforts to replicate the feel of the original volume. Imagin the feel of the leather, the crinkle of hand writen pages, the raised (pewter?)skull on the cover ... excuse me while I wanter off into dreamland for a bit.

Hi Krystn-- it's different when you have a kid at home. I used to go all out, too--now that it's just the two of us, unless we're doing some kind of holiday thing, we put out a poinsettia, hang a wreath, and that's about it.

As for coming to NYCC-- I'd love to. Just have to be asked!! :-) I must admit, though, speaking in front of a bunch of educators (and some students, I suspect) is a little daunting.

J.

Leia said: Vamp - the paperweight is beyond adorabe. It even sparkles!

It does indeed!

I think you're right about Amazon doing a replica. Since they bought the original, it would make sense. That would be a terrific piece to own.

J.

Here is the link to the Collector's Edition - http://www.amazon.com/Beedle-Collectors-Offered-Exclusively-Amazon/dp/0956010903/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1229008800&sr=8-2

Now if only I had $100 i could afford to spend on a book. Hopefully this isn't one of those (for a limited time only) things that means it's around for a couple months and that's it. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page there are some drool worthy images of the original volume. The pen and ink drawings and the ragged edges of the paper are enough to make this poor artist's heart go badump badump badump.

@Leia:

I'm more excited about reading the story inside, so I don't much care what the packaging looks like!

I did a benefit christmas stocking for a little girl and she's getting a copy of the book too. With my hopes that it fires her imagination.

Gina, I usually don't eiather. I do so much used book shopping that I can't! But something about leather, embossing, pen-and-ink, etc makes one's heart skip a beat. That is when it stops just being a book and turns into an art piece. :)

Leia -- :-) I hope you can get the collector's edition.

I do understand the impulse -- I keep wanting a really awesome collector's version of The Lord of The Rings -- I hold back from buying one, always afraid I'll miss the really great one.

I managed to work my way through the entire season of True Blood online -- whoohee.

Gina and Leia-- the collector's Beedle is truly beautiful. Special books become treasures whether they're copies or the real things.

I am about to embark on the True Blood adventure myself. I've seen the first four and really, like the later episodes better than the first. I hope to finish it next week. Gina, since you've seen them all, what did you think?

J.

re True Blood -- here are my highlights:

As the series goes on they deviate more from the first book -- which is the only book I've read so I can't tell if they are weaving in parts of other stories or not.

The relationships get incredibly complicated and beautifully (if sometimes annoyingly) realized by the actors. They've got to be having fun with this series.

There are still some shockingly porn-like scenes ahead but mercifully (to me) they taper off and don't show quite so much as the series goes on. I'm much more a cut-away-and-fade kind of girl and this right means I probably won't buy the series.

I had a really hard time finding the last two episodes and it sort of panicked me. So that's a sign I really enjoyed the series overall.

P.S. -- I did get word that Lord X is holed up in a swanky hotel in Dubai, feverishly watching "True Blood" and fingering his locket. The room service staff are nervous to take him food now -- they say he's muttering a lot under his breath and looks at them funny.

Strangely enough there are also reports of agitated fish and boiling waters in the sea around Dubai.

@ Gina and Jeanne - I've watched all the episodes and have been left with an overwhelming feeling of "meh." Sookie started off sort of interesting but now she's become a bit like milk toast. Her brother which I do not particularly like has become one of the more interesting characters, despite the expected gross deviation from the book's storyline. As for the stories with Lafayette and Tara ... I understand why HBO chose to fill out their characters but I've found that except for a few instances I could really care more or less about them. The whole thing with the exorcism and subsequent events left me wondering "why?" and I too was rather against the gratuitous sex scenes which I ended up skipping (but after all it is HBO so I'm not sure what I expected.) There are two things about the show I really liked. Chiefly, I love the way that the director uses sound to convince us that we are indeed in the Louisiana Bayou. In the first couple episodes, especially, I could almost feel the sticky humidity - something that I've never experienced with a television show before. Over all, though I've been rather disappointed in it. I've read a number of the books and really enjoyed them. However the director seems to project a level of malevolence (for lack of a better term) into the show that I never sensed in the novels.

@Leia:

I do like Lafayette -- I have a theory how he might be returning in Season 2. I do get the sense they've way overexpanded his character to bring in the nearly obligatory drug angle. In Book 1 he seems like a congenial backdrop and he's practically a main character in the TV show.

Tara is the one that annoys me to no end and I was particularly disappointed in her "revelation" re Miss Jeannette. I don't want to give too much away -- I think they blew an opportunity to expand on the exorcism theme but that bit just wrecked it and lost my last sympathy for her. She's not in Book 1 so I don't know what to make of her.

I do think they've gotten Andy Bellefleur wrong in the TV show.

One part from the book that really struck me wrong was the whole backstory with Uncle Bennett -- glad it's gotten only minimal play in the series. It strikes me wrong because Sookie's early extreme innocence and that bit about Uncle Bennett are at odds with each other, IMHO. When I read Book 1 I found a few gaping holes of unbelievability in the story and this was one of them that I could drive a truck through. (First we are told that NO man has ever touched her in certain ways before Bill, except -- oopsie -- Uncle Bennett did when she was 5? So she's been touched in a way that should negate the naive virginity she was putting out there.)

I like the undercurrent of malevolence actually. We really aren't talking about nice critters, we're talking about vampires trying to pass as nice critters. And some humans trying to pass as nice critters too.

Thank you Leia and Gina for your True Blood reports...I'll chime in when I've had a chance to see them all, too. I kind of wish I'd reread Book One but maybe that would have been a distraction.

As for Lord X, I do hope he hasn't been taken by the Dark Side!

J.

@ Gina - Ok so malevolence is not the right word ... I'm still trying to think of the right adjective and it's not coming to mind. I'll let oyu know when I think of it.

As for your annoyiance with the Ms. Jeanette revalation I'm completely right there with you as well as all the other plot holes you mentioned.

Tara does get on my nerves but during the one episode when Sookie had a loss (not really elaborating so I don't spoil anything) I felt that for just one episode Tara and Lafayett really came together as characters. That cohesiveness didn't last, but they were perfct for that one episode, and so was Sookie.

I think my one real issue with Sookie is she is TOO naive. Even if you have never slept with anyone, live with your grandmother, and exist in a tiny town where everyone knows everyone - no one is that clueless. And just pretending for a second that it was possible to be that clueless, Sookie of all people shouldn't be because she can hear people's thoughts. No matter what peopel portray on teh outside you know tha tno one's thoughts are that clean, especially in a pub where people are getting drunk and with the type of friends she has ....

I don't know, I enoyed the first book as a casual read, but I've foudn tha tthings that bothered me in the book bother me eve moreon teh screen b/c you can't just forget momentarily the issues that bother you.

@ Jeanne - well since (as far as we know) Lord X is not consumed with fear, anger, hate, or is even force sensitive ...

;)

Well, I'm just glad to know it's not just me that sees gaping holes in Dead Til Dark.

I have a confession. I just bought Dead in Dallas -- decided to give Sookie another shot. Though I first have to slog my way through the last 50 or few chapters of the first book, which is not really high on my list of priorities. Well, I did read the last 5 pages of the book already, but not a few chapters before that.

I can always tell whether I like a book by how long I wait to read the last 5 pages before finishing the book. It's not good when I do it, it means I'm deciding whether to keep reading.

So Jeanne and Mario -- hats off to both of you. I didn't get overwhelmed with plot holes in your books (that I've read -- I'm reading "The Watcher" now and I've read the first three Felix books and the first two Anna Strong books since MileHiCon.)

UGH -- "the last 50 or so pages...the last few chapters.." is what I was meaning above. Mea culpa.

Go jeanne go!!

@ Gina - Let me know what you think about the 2nd novel. I bought the first one at Target (reduced price), read it once and then sent it off to the used book store. It made me kind of sad that I didn't want it to hang around b/c I was hoping to have another series that I'd want to keep on the shelf next to Anna Strong and Tanya Huff's Blood & Smoke books. I ALMOST bought the second Sookie book but then thought I'd try and find it used instead. If you find you like it, I might go ahead and give Sookie another try. The books are a nice light read and have a lot of potential (less face it, after all Dead
Until Dark
is just the beginning of a long series and characters usually improve/flesh out as a series becomes more developed); but I try not to buy anything new that I won't be keeping around for the long haul.

Will do -- it might be awhile.

I'm reading The Watcher now, and also reading -- in a fit of non-vampy reading pleasure -- Ex-Kop by Warren Hammond. Which is too stupendous for words. I want to find Kop in hardback to match Ex-Kop. I'm totally besotted with Juno Mozambe.

Gina and Leia-- thanks for the nice words about Anna.

AND, Warren Hammond is in the critique group Mario and I share with five other wonderful writers. I'm going to tell you a secret about him. I'd read KOP and when Warren walked in for the first time, I said, "no f***ing way he wrote that book!" He is the nicest, quietest, gentlest person you've ever met. Also, drop dead gorgeous, but don't tell him I said THAT.

Anyway, I love his writing. He's working on the third book now and we in the group have the pleasure of reading the WIP.

Let me know if you can't find KOP in hardback. I'm sure we can do something about that.

J.

To Sexy-- where have you benn? We've missed you.

J.

@Jeanne:

I sorta kinda met Warren at MileHiCon so I know what you mean. And I've been chatting him up at Facebook, so he knows about my adoration for his books. I reviewed it on my blog too (said blog needs an overhaul but my review of Kop is staying.)

Yep, his wife found a keeper.
