Welcome to Biting-Edge, a blog shared by authors and vampire experts, Mario Acevedo and Jeanne Stein. We’ll cover urban fantasy, vampires, pop culture, and all things Joss Whedon. Unlike other fantasy blogs, we don’t insist on body cavity searches (unless you ask politely). Snarkiness is most welcome...though we won't promise not to bite back!

Hi all—Hope you had a wonderful holiday. Our was just what I’d hoped—my daughter and sister were with us as well as good friends (most California transplants like us.) Naturally, I forgot to take pictures BEFORE we started eating so all you can see are the ruins. Now that the house is empty again, it seems WAY too quiet.

I know it's too small to see, but if you look to the right of the china cabinet, the painting on the wall is by none other than my distinguished blog partner. If I wasn't so technically challenged, I'd blow it up...well, not literally of course.

We had a four legged visitor, too-- Alli is a rescue dog who belongs to my daughter. She was a perfect house guest!

A few items of interest (at least to me) in the news. As "a tribute to American booksellers, librarians and educators who supported" The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, Penguin Group built and opened a primary school in Afghanistan, about 150 miles from Kabul. Working with the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR and the U.S. Association for UNHCR, some 270 students in grades one through six are attending the school. Before it was completed, the students, a third of whom are girls, were taught outside. Makes me proud to be a Penguin author!

The 2008 Literary Review Bad Sex in Fiction Prize went to Rachel Johnson for her novel Shire Hell, according to the Associated Press (via USA Today). "All the passages this year are equally awful, but Rachel Johnson's struck us because of the mixture of cliche and euphemism. There were a couple of really bad animal metaphors in there."

Animal metaphors? John Updike was awarded the lifetime achievement award for winning the dubious honor four times in the past. He was a finalist again this year for “an explosive oral encounter in his latest book, The Widows of Eastwick.” He lost to Johnson. She must write really BAD sex.

I almost hate to ask this—any of you out there have a favorite BAD sex scene you’d like to share?

Saved the best for last—or next to last---some BSP coming up.

If anyone has NOT yet seen the great Dr. Horrible check this out. Not only can you view the video here, there’s a direct link to Amazon to order it in time for Christmas!!! How awesome is that? I loved it…

AND check out the rumors of a proposed Buffy film here and here. Now THAT would be a great Christmas present…recession, depression, market dumps…nothing could ruin my mood if this proves to be true!!!!

Now for the BSP:

PS Our mysterious Lord X is still unaccounted for. Where in the world is he?????

Comments:
The gods know I'd much rather see a Buffy movie than ever see Twilight. I may be a wee bit biased....just like more action in my paranormal books and movies. Still watch Lost Boys as a guilty pleasure flick....

A dog? In your house?????

Now I've seen it all.

Well it's not perfect but her is what I was able to do with your picture. You said the *right* of the china cabinet correct?

I saw that Dr. Horrible is coming out on amazon theother day and it got me really excited. It is actually coming out on my birthday. What better birthday present could one want?

Yes have we any mroe news about the mysterious Lord X?

Ok going to try this again. Here are links to a quick blow up I did of the painting (hoping I had the right one). If I had time Icoudl do a better job.

Okay, Jeff-- Alli is a WELL BEHAVED dog that DOESN'T bark!!! She's just about perfect.... you must be jealous!! :-)

J.

God, Leia-- if I had a brain, I'd be dangerous. It's to the LEFT of the cabinet. I don't know what I was thinking. Sorry you went to all that trouble. I'm slinking away now, embarrassed....

J.

Vickie said: The gods know I'd much rather see a Buffy movie than ever see Twilight.

I'm with you, though I do still intend to see Twilight...and read the books. In fact I was talking to someone this last weekend who really enjoyed Twilight. Maybe I can catch it this week.

J.

Hi Jeanne and Mario :)
Dropping by to say HI and wishing you Happy Holidays, and forever Buffy! Yey! VvvV

Right back at 'ya, Vamprowler-- We've missed you!

J.

Not sure where Lord X is. Last I heard, there was a rumor coming out of the Cairo Casbah that that some crazed lunatic was trying to rent camels and a camel driver. Something about wanting to check out Dubai, where he'd heard there be redheads.

Somebody should explain to him that there is plane service to Dubai.

@ Gina - you have wuite a network of contacts there. I haven't heard anything .. probably b/c I'm still camped out in Ireland with the vain hope that he might be logical and go soemwhere he's more likely to find that redheaded beauty of his. I never did understand those adventuring types ;)

@ Jeanne - well I was wondering. THe other looked a good bit like a mirror, but hey - who am I sto uestion the person who owns the painting? lol.

Here is a blown up version of the actual painting. I tried to clean it up a bit as it was rather pixalated.

*to question

Sorry, my fingers are tired tonight.

Leia-- You are such a doll-- I'll actually take a picture of it and post it on the blog next week. And you're right, the other thing IS a mirror.

I'm such an idiot.

J.

Gina said: Somebody should explain to him that there is plane service to Dubai.

But anybody can take a plane. And our Lord X a romantic. Camels would allow him to stop at every oasis along the way and question every sheik and nomad he might meet. Also, he may be afraid his love is being held captive. Redheads are in demand, you know.

J.

I want to announce that me, Vamprowler, is now working for Barnes and Nobles, yey! lol. I'm luvin it! I'll be pushin yer books for sure :)))

I love reading all the great stuff posted on this blog. You guys are the shiznit.

Hey, congrats for the new job!!! Hope you didn't give up all your great alien head stuff, though. I still have my paperweight right here by my computer!!

XO J.

@ Jeanne - A doll? well I try lol.

@ Vamprowler - ohhhh B&N. I always felt that would be an interesting place to work. Congrats on the Job. Also, what is this about alien head paperwights?

Jeanne: Oh yeah, Aliens and I are one. I like to consider myself an Alien Vampire, hehe.
My recent addition to my alien collection is an 8X10 gloss of the Lost In Space Robinson family! No, it's not signed....yet :)

Photographer Leia: Alien Head Paperweights are my own little creations! I turn smooth little river stones, harvested from a local babbling brook, and turn them into little painted alien head paperweights! I must say, they are little adorable creatures. And now they have names painted on their foreheads. Who could resist a little alien face named Glog or Shooloo gazing up at you while holding down your bills :)
By the looks of your ID, you're a photographer? So am I! Black and White is my thang. Nice to meet you! Or as Vampires say; 'Nice to MEAT you', wink wink

B&N rox!

Vamprowler said: Alien Head Paperweights are my own little creations! I turn smooth little river stones, harvested from a local babbling brook, and turn them into little painted alien head paperweights!

I will take a picture of mine and post it next week (along with Mario's painting--)

J.

@ Vamp - Those sound adorable! and, yes I do a little bit of everything but have especially enjoyed the work I've done with some historic buisnesses. My guilty indulgence, howeverm is cemetery photography. I shoot digital more recently, but nothing beats a brain cell killing 8 hour darkroom stint with b&w film and fiber paper :) Call me old fashioned.

@ Jeanne: I would love to see this paper weight of yours.

I wanna work at B&N.

A little birdy told me Lord X wants to work there too.

Gina, Lord X is indeed a very multi-fasceted man of many ambitions.

Being an international man of mystery would totally get boring after a while, don't you agree?

Not at all comparable to the magic of a bookstore.

I bet James Bond really wants to work at Tattered Cover.

Gina said: I bet James Bond really wants to work at Tattered Cover.

Of course he could, too, being the big brain that he is. His photographic memory would make him the perfect employee-- one good turn around the book store and he'd know where EVERY single book was shelved. That way when the villain walked in looking for the next Nora Roberts, he could walk him right to it, stick him with a watch blade, and lower him gently into a chair with the book propped open on his lap. Then he'd leave for lunch and never come back.

Gotta love his style.

J.

That would explain his many store-to-store transfers...

Off a baddie in front of the Rachel Ray..er, cookbook aisle, then on to a new town, a new B&N.

He just better not splatter any body fluids on my girl Giada's books.

I just saw this on the B&N forum. Congrats on Anna Strong being nominated as best female protag for the RT readers choice awards. :) YAY!!

Are you going to RT? I applied for the begining writers scholarship so I could go but I won't hear untill feb or march.

The tot says Anna deserves new black sparkly shoes for her nomination

thank you Suzanne and tot-- I just found out myself through Caitlin Kitredge courtesy of Jackie Kessler. I am so excited--it's pretty amazing!

I am planning to go to RT--and sparkly black shoes might be just the ticket!!!

J.

You can't say no to black sparkly shoes. After all they have two major things going for them 1) they are black and you can never ever go wrong with black and 2) they are sparkly.

congrats to Anna!

Congrats Jeanne!!

What is RT?

:) Jackie Kessler's the one who posted on B&N. The tot and I wish you the best of luck! We're rooting for Anna.

Gina -- RT = Romantic Times, they review books and they also have an annual conference that looks *amazing.* Lots of great urban fantasy writers are speaking this year too. I would love to go.

Ahh -- cool thanks :) I hope you do get to go!

@Suzanne: Are you talking about the one in Orlando, FL in April? (you know I ran to google to look it up.) It does look pretty cool. It looks like both Mario and Jeanne are planning to attend.

Would you try to do one of the pre-con workshops for aspiring writers?

I visited FL two years ago and spent a lovely day on the beach -- which probably doesn't sound that revolutionary except that I'd never been to the beach before in my nearly 40 years (land-locked Coloradoan) and so it made quite the impression. (Too bad Lord X wasn't there to slather me in coconut oil.) Ever since then I practically go into a trance when I hear the word "Florida."

Suzanne, Leia and Gina-- thanks for the congrats. The competition is daunting and I'm thrilled to have been nominated. Being on the same ticket as Charlaine Harris, Patricia Briggs, TA Pratt, Jackie Kessler, Rachel Caine and Jeaniene Frost makes me feel like a winner whatever the outcome of the actual vote! I am very excited.

RT is an experience that everyone should enjoy at least once. I was at Daytona Beach, too, and loved being back by the ocean. Orlando is not quite at the ocean but there is Disney World...

XO Jeanne

I know a great hotel in Delray Beach where all you have to do is cross the street to access a fairly uncrowded beach. North of Palm Springs. Oh, trance time again.

But -- looking at their posted schedule you and Mario aren't on nearly enough panels!

Good luck w/ your bookstore event today too -- I was thinking of stopping in to say hi to you and Carol (whom I've met before) if mundane work doesn't interfere. It depends on if I can escape the keyboard.

Gina -- yeah, if I get the scholarship it includes one of the pre-conference workshops. ITA that Jeanne and Mario not on the schedule. (I had to look it up too, it's been about 2 months since I checked it out). Otherwise, I'm going to have to wait until they have it out on the west coast someplace. :)

Jeanne -- I hope your event went well.

They are on the schedule but not that much -- it looked like maybe 1 panel a day tops.

What was curious was that there were a LOT of other vampire-oriented sessions. I didn't recognize some of the people listed but I'm curious about Carole Nelson Douglas. Did not realize she wrote vampire stories.

There were some interesting panels though. It would be tempting to sign up but we're having waves of layoffs right now (had a batch today in fact) and I'm not sure about committing funds to anything.

I ended up missing Jeanne's event. Too much other stuff to do.

Oh -- I get it now. Carole Nelson Douglas has a new series rolling out this fall featuring Delilah Street, Paranormal Investigator.

Hi Suzanne & Gina-- No, I'm not on the precon schedule-- I have panels on Thursday and Friday--3 in all. I have never pitched a writers workshop, though I'd like to. I enjoy talking about the craft.

Gina, I looked for you on Sunday--but I certainly understand how hectic it is this time of year. Too many conflicts!
