Welcome to Biting-Edge, a blog shared by authors and vampire experts, Mario Acevedo and Jeanne Stein. We’ll cover urban fantasy, vampires, pop culture, and all things Joss Whedon. Unlike other fantasy blogs, we don’t insist on body cavity searches (unless you ask politely). Snarkiness is most welcome...though we won't promise not to bite back!

Countdown to Quantum of Solace... I can hardly wait!!! In fact, we watched Casino Royale this weekend just to get in the mood! Here's a good 007 website to check out. Are you planning to go see the newest?

Not so good news (once again) about Dollhouse. This is taken from an aricle in the Observer:

"Dollhouse" Tv Series - Fox Sets Midseason Schedule, Whedon Fans Shed Tear

Says in part: With television schedules becoming year-round events, Fox has gotten an early jump on the network competition by announcing their mid-season lineup... and if you’re a fan of Joss Whedon, prepare to be disappointed. Mr. Whedon’s latest series, the Elisha Dushku-starring spy-thriller Dollhouse, has been stranded on Friday nights at 9 p.m. If that time slot sounds familiar to you, that’s probably because it’s where shows generally go to die (just ask CBS’ The Ex-List) and where Mr. Whedon saw his last Fox venture, Firefly, meet an early grave…

Adding insult to injury, Fox is placing the sputtering Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles on Fridays at 8 p.m. as a lackluster lead-in for Dollhouse. All of this spells predictable doom, which is a shame since the recently released trailer for Dollhouse makes the show look pretty good; a deft mix of Alias, the Bourne movies and James Cameron’s Dark Angel series. Needless to say, "Save Dollhouse" fan campaigns are already underway.

Something for the writers out there--the newest in identification processing…what do you think? The comments are as interesting as the article.

Cast of Twilight looking decidely UNvampirish...

I'm adding a PS here: Twilight has also just been released. I haven't read the books (should I admit that) but I am considering going to see the flic just so I know what all the fuss is about. Anyone else? Here's a VF review for you reading pleasure.

OH NO! The Firefly spot? Has Fox learned nothing?

Twilight - I expect that the movie will be quite good and certainly intend to go see it. I read the books to find out what the fuss was about myself and will admit that they are a bit of a guilty pleasure, but I feel the hype is a little excessive for the form they are in now. Meyer has some very good ideas and an interesting premise, but the novels are in need of a very strict editing. If edited down, I think they would really shine in the genre.

I haven't watched this program and haven't really watched more than a few episodes of the Sarah Connor Chronicles (because I'm out of the habit of watching TV), but I have a nit to pick.

Why is it that they seem determined to kill off imaginative programming, yet still they rally behind a preponderance of vapid reality shows? Down with reality shows!!!

I think I'll start turning on the TV to these two shows on Fri night in protest if nothing else.

And Fringe. Watch Fringe if you don't already.

Not sure about the Twilight movie.

Jeanne, I knew this about Dollhouse but didn't want to bum you out yet. :)

The previews for Twilight look really good. I really enjoyed the books, and am eagerly awaiting the movie. Sure, you should go without having read them.

Leia said:Meyer has some very good ideas and an interesting premise, but the novels are in need of a very strict editing.

You are not the first person to mention this--I'm really curious now. I'll see the movie first, but the books may creep up on my tbr pile.

J.

I'm with you, Gina. I count myself among the ten people in the entire country who have never watched a reality show. Now I have to say, some of my best buddies do--a guilty pleasure as Leia said earlier about Twilight.I'm a CSI junkie, love Bones (probably because of the Buffy connection), Boston Legal, Pushing Up Daisies, Life on Mars, Sarah Connor, Smallville. I suppose my guilty pleasures are The Shield and Sons of Anarchy. I do love those bad boys!!

J.

Hi Carol-- I can't believe FOX-- what the f**k is wrong with those people?

I will go see Twilight before I read the books. Reearch, since I'm playing with a YA idea of my own (isn't everybody?) :-)

J.

I could deal with a handful of reality shows but they've gotten entirely out of hand!

I mean, they are infecting the SciFi channel! (where they should probably be called unreality shows)

I don't have any must-see TV, except I try to cath the Craig Ferguson monologue -- I like Medium but I'm annoyed waiting for it to start. And I like Fringe but keep forgetting what station/night it's playing.

Instead I spend that time surfing the net reading blogs.

Gina--Surfing the net, reading blogs, huh? Probably a better use of your time anyway... :-)

PS I like Medium, too. The one program I can't seem to get into is Ghost Whisperer-- I think it's the too perfect Jennifer Love Hewitt.

J.

I picked up Twilight, opened it to the middle, read a paragraph or three of teen angst, and put it down. A friend whose opinion I trust said the MC doesn't actually do anything besides put her faith in her "true love" and that it appeals to young girls who dream of some man protecting them.

Ick. Apparently I missed the memo that men are supposed to protect me.

Plus the vampire is supposedly like a century old and the girl is 17.

Triple Ick.

Hey, I sent you an email via your website address. You get it? I'm sure it's buried under all your fan mail! :D

And yes, Sons of Anarchy rocks!

Hey Sexy-- no, I didn't get a message on webmail. When did you send it?

Teen angst-- actually, angst of any kind, is a turn off for me, too. But I may have to rethink that if I'm going to write a YA-- as I recall, MY teenage years were nothing BUT angst. However, there is angst and there is angst, if you know what I mean.

J.

Jeanne is teen angst is a turn off than you might want to avoid Twilight. I will admit that more than once I found myself rolling my eyes or going "oh my God" and gagging b/c the angst got out of hand or Bella was mooning yet again about how gorgeous and perfect Edward was. That said though it has a little give as it is a YA novel after all and isn't teen angst sort of a defining factor of most YA novels? Also, again, I think a lot of the issues would have been solved if someone had sat down and made Meyer realize just how many times she reused words and phrases and rambled on when she didn't need to. The four books combined are 2442 pages and if gone over with a fine tooth comb you could easily get rid of a fourth of those pages. It's not so much a criticism of Meyer though because as a reader I can tell what she was trying to do. I just think some of the books (ESPECIALLY Breaking Dawn) were published too quickly in an effort to take advantage of the series' popularity while it is at such a feverish pitch.

Also I suppose I must keep in mind that I am not part of the targeted demographic :P

As for the Buffy connection in Bones, it took me ages to stop freaking out every time Seeley stepped outside during the day. I kept thinking that he had a death wish.

Leia. I think you hit it right the first time when you said she needed editing. I guess when you are such a HUGE bestseller, the fear is that anything that might hurt the magic is too be avoided at any cost--even if it might result in a better book.

And I had the same reaction the first few times I watched Bones--egad-- Angel is going to burst into flames!!

:-) J.

I didn't find the Twilight books to be overly-angsty. :) I think the reason that the books have the appeal that they do is because Meyer deals with the intense emotion that teens feel, and doesn't make fun of or overplay it.

Carol said:I think the reason that the books have the appeal that they do is because Meyer deals with the intense emotion that teens feel, and doesn't make fun of or overplay it.

Which is the kiss of death in a YA, isn't it?

J.

Well, I should be using my net-surfing, blog-reading time to better proof my posts for comma usage. ;-)

And writing. Writing would be a better use of my time. At least watching a TV show can be justified as research on the structure of story.

I have to admit I am not attracted to Twilight. If you see it let me know if I should reconsider.

Gina said: have to admit I am not attracted to Twilight. If you see it let me know if I should reconsider.

Will do..

J.

I doubt I will see the movie Twilight. I read the first one to see what the fuss was about and found myself humming the theme song to Dawson's Creek.....the book was too vamp lite and I really don't remember feeling all that angsty when I was a teen (back in the day..)

As for The Dollhouse being put on so late at night..at least there's always DVD later on and hulu.com when I can't catch an episode. It's how I watch Fringe or any show that comes on after 8 or 9pm which is bath and bed time for Lady K.

Jeanne: I finally used my Amazon gift certificate I won from you along with LEGACY. Ordered #1 and #3 in your Anna Strong series along with Richelle Mead - SUCCUBUS BLUES and Mark Henry - HAPPY HOUR OF THE DAMNED. Felt compelled to get the last one since I won from his hosting the interview with you. = )
They are all packed in my suitcase for my trip to Colorado Springs on Monday. Quiet time when not at work, so planning on quality reading.

Hi Jeanne! The tot was using her magnetic dress-up pieces on the Anna maganets yesterday. Anna's not wearing red high-heels.

The tot is obsessed with Vampires and her sis and I have read the books, so I'll probably take them to see the Twilight movie, if it checks out as "tot appropritate" (the teen Gurlz in my dance class all have their tickets to see it at 12:01, so they're going to give me the down-low, lol).

I read all four books and found them interesting but it was more because the gurlz "made" me and it makes me cool with my nieces to be able to talk about them, then anything else, lol.

The tot says "hi."

Hey Vickie-- You chose wisely with Richelle and Mark-- Hope you enjoy the books. Hasn't the weather been gorgeous?

J.

Hi Suzanne-- Anna in red pumps! I love it. Give the tot a kiss from me--or from Anna-- that would probably be more impressive!

Let me know what you think of the movie.

J.

I sent it to the address off your website. Hmm. Maybe I'll track it down and send it again, eh? :)

Sexy said: I sent it to the address off your website. Hmm.

HMMMM-- jeanne@jeannestein.com? I'll keep checking...
