Welcome to Biting-Edge, a blog shared by authors and vampire experts, Mario Acevedo and Jeanne Stein. We’ll cover urban fantasy, vampires, pop culture, and all things Joss Whedon. Unlike other fantasy blogs, we don’t insist on body cavity searches (unless you ask politely). Snarkiness is most welcome...though we won't promise not to bite back!

Well, I guess the big news in the publishing world is the plagiarism charge being leveled against popular romance writer Cassie Edwards. The web blog Smart Bitches Who Love Trashy Books, "posted numerous excerpts from Edwards' novels and placed them alongside passages from reference books and magazines that were found by using the Google search." In a New York Times article Candy Tan and Sarah Wendell, the blog’s co-authors, indicated that "while Edwards may not have infringed copyright law, they consider her actions unethical.” Check the link if you want to follow the whole sordid story.

The coolest thing I got for Christmas this year was the complete 007 movie set—from Dr. No to Daniel Craig in Casino Royale. I love James Bond. Love the novels and I have them all: Ian Fleming’s originals, John Gardner’s (commissioned by the Fleming estate to continue the series,) and Raymond Benson’s (who took over from Gardner.) Next May, Sebastian Faulk will release Devil May Care. Faulk is the latest to pen a Bond novel, the release date coinciding with the centenary of Ian Fleming’s birth.

But I digress. Back to the movies. This set is fantastic—21 movies. The only two missing are the spoof of Casino Royale starring David Niven (which I never liked—I take my Bond seriously) and the Sean Connery Never Say Never Again, which was not done by the Broccoli film group. My husband and I are starting at the beginning to watch them in chronological order. Each DVD also comes with a special features disk that gives lots of really cool information. Like, do you know what Gert Frobe (Goldfinger), Ursula Andress (Honey Ryder) and George Lazenby (James in his one and only Bond movie, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service) have in common? All had their voices dubbed! I’ll bet you didn’t know that, did you?

Now, it makes no sense for me to like Bond—I’m a fan of kick-ass females—but there’s something delicious about his direct approach to crime fighting. On second thought, maybe it makes perfect sense for me to like him.

And speaking of kiss ass females—did you catch Terminator: The Sarah Connor chronicles? Talk about kicking ass—They’ve certainly come up with some interesting one-sheets to advertise this series! I love it. The link connects you to an interview with Summer Glau, the cyborg assigned to help Sarah and John. I love how they title it “A Star is Born” as if her work in Serenity and Firefly never existed!

Well, we Whedon fans know different, don’t we?

Want to share your favorite gifts this year?

PS – The Barnes and Noble feature is still going on so stop by…. Ask a question, leave a comment. You may even learn things about me you never knew.

Did they dub Mr Lazenby's because they didn't think the world was ready for an Australian-accented Bond?

Have a lovely day! :-)

Sarah Connor has been my fave kick-ass fem since she showed up buff in Term2. She's listed as my Hero in my Myspace :)
I wasn't sure if I was going to like the chronicles because I'm so particular, but I like the way it's moving.
Remember how we all took that vote a couple years ago on who our favorite kickass hero was (or something to that affect)? Many of us agreed on Sarah.

Ahhh Bond! James Bond! You know, I always loved Connery, but I've taken a real liking to Daniel Craig. *shiver* Yum.

Sarah Connor ... yes, she & Ripley have been some of my favorite ass-kicking heroines, along with the Buffster (of course) and ANNA STRONG!

Most favorite Christmas gift was from my DH who knows me too well .... an 800 gigabyte external hard drive for my laptop. Jewelry? Who needs jewelry? Give me geek toys!

Most unique Christmas gift was from DD#2 who gave me ... I kid you not ... a pirate devil duck the size of a chihuahua. Yes, I'll bring him to lunch, IF we can ever have lunch!

Hey Tez-- I think you are right-- probably too cultured for those upper crust British to understand!

One funny comment was made by the actress Honor Blackman who played Pussy Galore in Goldfinger. She said the first scene they shot was one at Goldfinger's Kentucy farm and when the camera's started to roll and Frobe said his first line, she realized she wasn't understanding a word he said-- so she'd just wait for him to stop talking and would speak her line! When Frobe took the part, he assured everyone he could speak English....

:-) Jeanne

Hi Lorri-- Oh yeah, Sarah Connor is my favorite. I loved Linda Hamilton in the part, especially in T-2. She was amazing.

I'm with you, though, I do like the way this series has begun. And, of course, if we took that vote again, Summer Glau might be right up there in the top ten ass-kicking female pole as well. Agree or disagree?

J.

Hey Vick-- Yes, Daniel Craig definitely did a good job in Casino Royale (which is included in this set, too, btw.)

How about bringing that devil duck to the meeting on Saturday? I want to see it. Where did he get it?

And thanks for including Anna Strong with Buffy and Sarah and Ripley. That's quite an honor. :-)

To Vicki and Lorri-- Don't know why I'm showing up as "anonymous" all of a sudden. Must be a glitch here somewhere!!

Jeanne

Whoops-- seems to have corrected itself. You don't think I could have hit a wrong button do you?

J.

Jeanne,
With computers.....anything can happen! lol
Linda Hamilton got so damn stripped in that movie. I think she was able to Chin with her pinky! I loved how she looked like a junky and just raw with desperation.
Out of all the flicks out there, T2 had it all.
(Anna now takes the torch from Sarah)
Lor

Hey Lorri-- when I saw how buff Linda Hamilton had gotten for the part, I couldn't believe it. In the first movie, she had a soft look about her. That sure changed! It was perfect for the character and you described it perfectly-- a junky raw with desperation.

That's a great line, btw. Can I use it? :-)

Yup, you can use the line :)
(Kudos on the compliment)

thanks, Lorri!

J.
