Welcome to Biting-Edge, a blog shared by authors and vampire experts, Mario Acevedo and Jeanne Stein. We’ll cover urban fantasy, vampires, pop culture, and all things Joss Whedon. Unlike other fantasy blogs, we don’t insist on body cavity searches (unless you ask politely). Snarkiness is most welcome...though we won't promise not to bite back!

  Nada-Zero-Zilch
Which is what I have for this week. Finishing the final (first) draft for the next Anna book, Haunted, took up all my perusing time. So here's the deal...YOU write the blog this week-- tell us what caught your eye in the news, what movies you saw or want to see, what books you read, what videos you found, what's new in your life. There just may be a prize(s) involved so get to it!!!

I know you can't post videos in comments, but give us a link.

Ready.
Set.
GO....

I’ll bite on the books read. The other day I was strolling through my local B & N and saw the cover of Out of Sight by Elmore Leonard and decided that was the book I felt like reading Right At This Moment. This was a purely spontaneous decision. I love the Steven Soderbergh movie with George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez, and recommend it if you haven’t seen it. I came home and downloaded it onto my color Nook and am now about 40 pages in. The book I finished most recently is Bloodshot by Cherie Priest. This is a fun romp and I look forward to the next book. Without giving away the plot let’s just say when the main character is a vampire thief with an ex Navy Seal drag queen and blind vampire for supporting characters a good time is guaranteed. I actually read this as a Real Book, picked up and signed by Ms. Priest at a recent event at University Bookstore in Seattle in support of the Clockwork Century release. During that event she stated that she gets more e-mail berating her for her scientifically inaccurate zombies (Boneshaker) than practically any other subject. I found this highly amusing. Do people not realize the whole made up concept behind fiction?? Rest assured, the vampires in Bloodshot are entirely scientifically accurate. Ms. Priest clearly consulted with top vampire physiologists for this tome ;-). Prior to that I polished off The Devil’s Star by Jo Nesbo, also a signed copy of a paper book. Nesbo is a Norwegian writer (who speaks excellent English) sometimes referred to in the press as “the next Stieg Larsson”. Ignore that faint praise. Nesbo is much, much better. He can actually write, and you won’t find yourself wondering why every last little bit of food is described in tedious detail and why no editor thought to take a red pencil to a few hundred pages of the book. The Devil’s Star is several books into his Harry Hole series. I recommend starting with The Redbreast, which is third in the series, but the first published in English. He was here touring in support of The Snowman, the most recently released (in the US) book in the series. That’s when I found out that The Redeemer comes between The Devil’s Star and The Snowman, and was released in the UK, but not here. Naturally after that I discovered the Amazon UK website (not that I didn’t know it existed; I just never thought to look at it before). My friends, be forewarned: this is a scary place. Entire paychecks could be swallowed up ordering books you’d like to read and that are published in the UK, but not the US. And get this: it took less than a week for my purchase to land in my mailbox from the UK. I’ve started a Wish List. Sigh.

Jo Nesbo has been getting rave reviews...but I have to ask...a hero named Harry Hole???? It keeps tripping me up!

J.

Yes, well, Harry Hole doesn’t sound the same in Norwegian as it does in English, nor does it have the same connotation. In my mind I always pronounce Harry American style, but Hole Norwegian style, which is more like Hoo-la (soft e, think “le” in French, but with the emphasis on the first syllable). Being of Nordic extraction (Finnish, not Norwegian) I grew up hearing native speakers of all of the Scandanavian languages so this is easy for my mind to do. At his appearance Nesbo explained how he came up with the name. He grew up in a small village, not the Big City of Oslo. The name of the police officer in this town had the surname of Hole. Jo and his brother were, like many young boys, rambunctious and into all sorts of trouble. This would provoke their mother to threaten them with “Hole’s gonna get you!” Hence, he grew up intimidated by Hole. When it came time to name his character he just had to pick the name of his village policemen. And yes, the man knew, and was proud to be the name behind the character.

Um...so I have book news. My series is now names "THE AETHER CHRONICLES" and book one has been cganed to (just) INNOCENT DARKNESS (the "a steampunk fairytale" part has been dropped). Other than that, I'm just hiding in the editing cave, though the tot says hi. We cant wait for the new book!

My week has been spent getting my adopted kitty, an orange tabby named Tigger (God help me, he knows his name so I can't change it) used to my resident beast - a jack russell/foxhound mix named Leo. Leo seems to think we've adopted 40 cats - even when he knows exactly where the cat is he checks every other place it might be to see if its possibly mutated and divided into multiple cats.

I watched Falling Skies, the new sci-fi series, which had the potential to be great. I like Noah Wylie as an actor, but I had trouble picturing him as father to a 20ish son. The aliens were interesting. The plot not so much. I think it will get old quick. Still, it was better than anything else on...but I'd still rather watch The Walking Dead for post apocalyptic adventure.

As for books, this week I read Afterlight by Elle Jasper, Angel's Blood by Nalini Singh (an interesting take on angels and vampires), Stripped by Marcia Collette and I'm re-reading Jaye Well's Red-Headed Stepchild series.

In the news, our local stations have been obsessed with the capture of Whitey Bulger, a mobster who has managed to avoid capture for years. As interesting as it is, the sheer number of times they've interrupted tv to update us on him makes me wish he'd continued to avoid the FBI. (Seriously, it's reached the point where I keep thinking they're going to give us breaking coverage of what he's eating, when he's using the bathroom, etc.)

Finally, my favorite video of the week was on Like Cool (www.likecool.com) and called Unleash Your Fingers. It's absolutely brilliant!

Books being read:
BLOOD OATH: Nathaniel Cade Book One - Christopher Farnsworth

CLEOPATRA: A Life - Stacy Schiff, BOCD in the car

Finished listening to the highly fab LIFE - Keith Richards, narr Johnny Depp and Keith Richards and Joe Hurley while on the drive to Kansas last week for our annual Spa Week.

My sister and I took her boys and Lady K to see Super 8 last week for one of our break days. Such a good flick and can definitely recommend it.

The kids made a zombie movie...Lady K was the lovely Clare.
