Welcome to Biting-Edge, a blog shared by authors and vampire experts, Mario Acevedo and Jeanne Stein. We’ll cover urban fantasy, vampires, pop culture, and all things Joss Whedon. Unlike other fantasy blogs, we don’t insist on body cavity searches (unless you ask politely). Snarkiness is most welcome...though we won't promise not to bite back!

Mario and I had fun yesterday!!

No, not that kind of fun…

We were interviewed on a Douglas County Library program called: Authors @ Douglas County Libraries. The host, James LaRue, is the Director of the Douglas County Library system. The program has won an Emmy, and the site, www.thenetworkdc.us, has actually won FIVE. Anyway, David Schier and his excellent crew did a great job of putting us at ease in front of the cameras. The program itself will go up in January so I’ll let you know when. It’s a chance to see Mario in something other than a bathrobe. In fact, here is a preview.

And here we are ready for our close-ups!!

Now, on to the regularly scheduled program:

So how did I like the newest Bond, you ask????

I LIKED it!! Non-stop action. IMHO, Daniel Craig is the Bond Fleming envisioned—a blunt instrument. Maybe not physically (no dark hair, Hoagy Carmichael face) but Craig has the Bond coldness down pat. Anybody else see it? What d’ya think?

Another new vamp movie that looks good: Let The Right One In." Based on the novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist, here's what my favorite unofficial critic (Derek Tatum of the LitVamp group) has to say:

My friend Carol told me that "Let The Right One In" was playing in
Atlanta, and I was already visiting Paul this weekend, so we went to
see it. It is a brilliant film, easily the best vampire movie since
"Interview With The Vampire," and honestly, "Let The Right One In"
plays better as its own thing and not just as an "adaptation of a
book." The movie leaves out some of the events of the book, but
interestingly enough, leaving those events out did not detract from
the overall story. The movie nails the spirit of the book - even some
of the camera angles and the color palette of the film are exactly as
I imagined them.

And two other reviews if you're interested: Denver Post
and BlogCritics.

And since he mentioned Carol who is also a friend of mine, here's a more heartening perspective on Dollhouse that she sent me.

In other news, the Amazon/ Penguin Contest is back. From Shelf Awareness:

The e-tailer's Breakthrough Novel Award competition will return for a second year, open to new manuscript submissions as of Groundhog's Day, 2009, and once again they will partner with the Penguin Group. Amazon calls the first contest "enormously successful," despite the tepid response from the marketplace to the August release of winner Bill Loehfelm's FRESH KILLS. (Loehfelm's book has sold approximately 4,000 copies through outlets tracked by Nielsen Bookscan.) But Penguin has acquired rights to four of the other ten finalists: Bad Things Happen by Harry Dolan (Amy Einhorn Books, July 2009); The Wet Nurse's Tale by Erica Eisdorfer (Putnam, August 2009); The Butterflies of Grand Canyon, by Margaret Erhard (Plume, January 2010); and Casting Off, by Nicole Dickson (NAL).

This year's contest will accept up to 10,000 submissions (double the number from last year) during a seven-day window. The professional judges reading and selecting from among the final three contestants include authors Sue Grafton and Sue Monk Kidd, agent Barney Karpfinger and Penguin Press editor-in-chief Eamon Dolan. Last year the judges had to review the final top ten manuscripts. And though there will be twice as many submissions, half as many books as last year will get "reviewed" by Publishers Weekly (500 "quarter-finalists"). Hewlett Packard has not returned as a sponsor this year.

Contest site here.

The latest in the Rowling copyright infringement case (from Shelf Awareness):

RDR Appeals Rowling Ruling
NEW YORK — A publisher who lost his bid to print a Harry Potter encyclopedia written by Grand Rapids native Steven Vander Ark will appeal a federal judge's decision that the book constituted copyright infringement on author J.K. Rowling, court records show.

Lawyers for Roger Rapoport last week filed a notice of appeal seeking to overturn a judge's ruling and the imposition of $6,750 in fines against RDR Books, a Muskegon-based company Rapoport owns and operates.

The article goes on to note Rapoport has nothing to lose in appealing. The judgment against the company was small.

Lots of good discussion following last week’s blog about Twilight. Haven’t started the book, and will probably not go on opening night a la Quantum, but do plan to go. Those of you who will see it this weekend, be sure to share your opinion.

Gina wanted to know who the big guy was standing next to Mario in their bathrobes err--smoking jackets—

Mario responds: I didn't note his name because I forgot what it was. He's from the UK and a really nice guy. He wasn't on the program.

So big, really nice guy from the UK-- if you see this, let us know who you are!! :-)

Comments:
The intrigue grows...tall, mysterious, yummy accent....probably owns a castle filled with stuffed deer heads and rusting battle swords...a bit lonely, depressed b/c he didn't make it to Denver when he was on the distaff side of the pond and...

Sorry, imagination running amok again.

Jeanne, you look very good in red.

Hey Gina-- I hope he comes across this blog and responds. We can build an entire story (fantasy) around him-- he might be a Lord who lost his true love and wanders the world aimlessly searching for something to fill the void...

Or?????

thanks for the compliment. I like red. Makes me feel powerful!!

:-)

Jeanne

Hi Jeanne,
Someone was just telling me about "let the right one in" on Sunday. We'll have to check it out. She thought the tot would like it, since the tot has decided that she's going to marry a vampire when she grows uop (and becomes a mermaid doctor). Hmmm...maybe I'm seeking inspiration in the wrong places, lol.

Hmm....maybe Felix Gomez should go into the matchmaking business.

@Jeanne: we need a code name for our wandering lord. Sadly it's been a long, brainjuice-sucking day for me.

I plan to go see Twilight Saturday afternoon if tickets are available (the local theatre doesn't allow advanced ticket sales). There is not enough courage in me to go today and face all the fangirls head on. I'll pop by later that day an let you know what I think. The only commentary I've heard on Quantam of Solace was rather "meh," but the sorice hated Casion Royale. I believe tat this therefore bodes well for the new film. It's about time James Bond became hadcore and stopped relying on lucky cashes of nifty technology to save his life. (Those cars at the end of Die Another Day anyone? Less than impressed.)

Alos I must say that the "Where the Wild Things Are" shirt in the bottom photograph, in the group of four, is incredible. I need to find one.

@ Suzanne, mermaid doctor. You should totally run with that. :)

@ Jeanne, also the wandering Lord needs some kind of trusty sword or knife that has an emotional backstory to it that has been with him through thick and thin. You can't wander the world aimlessly in search of the Void Filling Something without one of those. It's a staple for a reason.

Hey Suzanne-- Seems to me, the tot is all the inspiration you need! She'll grow up to be writer unless I miss my guess!!

Happy Thanksgiving, btw.

XO J.

Gina, I love the idea of a code name. Let's work on it. Chime in out there if you come up with a good one!

And Leia, can't wait to hear your impressions of Twilight. As for QoS, I've long since stopped being swayed by opinion (either way) on movies I want to see. And I admit, as a Bond fanatic, no amount of bad press would keep me away!

Now, for our mysterious Lord's talisman. I kind of like the idea of a locket or ring that belonged to his love--or was given to him by his love. Then when it's stolen, his quest becomes one not only of redemption, but of revenge!!!

What do you think?

J.

A locket or a ring ... I can buy that. I always think it's nice when the talisman is something rather mundane in nature (a small carving or a stone given him by a childhood sweetheart that disappeared?) that has special meaning only to the lead character. As for swrods and knives, maybe I need to lay off reading so many "guy" fantasy books. I think it is beginning color my judgement.

I like the small carving or stone-- it has to have some value other than sentimental, though. Maybe it holds magic of some kind and our Lord doesn't know it. It's stolen by a sorcerer who recognizes its power but can't release it because only love can call it forth...

Jeesh-- maybe I should stop reading so much "romantic" fantasy!

J.

Hidden magical powers that show themselves at the most opportune time, when all else seems to be a loss ... that's always a good way to go. Maybe the person that gave him the talisman (said childhood sweetheart) had a magical gift and fashioned it especially for him without saying anything? o.0 It had to have some significant sentimental value or he wouldn't have held onto it all that time.

I'm thinking our lachrymous lord's code name is Lord X. It's a little cliched -- but if we knew his name then we wouldn't need a code name, now would we?

What do you think?

How about a locket? With the hair of his beloved inside? A single, strawberry red curl tied in a white ribbon. The magic resides in the hair. But he doesn't realize it.

The castle (in Wales, btw) is full of rusty swords.

oops..gvick and Gina are the same person btw

Jeanne,
the tot actually told me that she'd teach me how to write so I could be a writer, lol.

Leia said:Maybe the person that gave him the talisman (said childhood sweetheart) had a magical gift and fashioned it especially for him without saying anything?

YES!!

And HIDDEN inside, as Gina said, is the single strawberry curl.

We've got a good story going. Lord X, we'll take care of you-- no more moping around the Welsh castle playing with your rusty swords!

:-) J.

Suzanne, I have no doubt the tot could do it...she can teach me a thing or two, I'll bet. Wish we were closer.

J.

Lord X is drawn inexorably towards beer -- having left Milwaukee, he's currently en route to Egypt where he heard beer got its start.

The Lord X story is becoming rather amusing :)

Well I am finally back from watching Twilight (I love small town theatres with $4 matinees). For personal reasons the movie was rather amusing since Bella notes that the town of Forks has around 3100 residents, and the town that I had to drive to for a theatre boasts around 2500. Other than that I thought he movie was quite good. Certainly not Oscar material, but I doubt anyone really expected that. I went in with rather low expectations after reading so many negative reviews but was instead pleasantly surprised. A number of the scenes from the book were reworked and smashed together for obvious reasons, but for the most part these were well done and fit snugly into the storyline. If I had not read the book I would have never noticed. Overall the acting was pretty descent and improved as the movie went on (either that or it grew on me). I actually left feeling bad for Charlie's character when in the books I couldn't stand him. Patterson did a good job of delivering the "possessive abusive boyfriend" lines that Edward was obligated to say without making them cheesy or overly er ... possessive abusive boyfriend lines. I left the theatre with a sneaking suspicion that Meyer wrote the story to in fact be a screen play. My only real criticism (besides the sparkling skin ... that just has issues no matter how I look at it) is that the movie turned small town NW America into a multicultural Mecca. As a result Bella has one male from about every major skin tone (Asian, White (both blond and brown haired), Black, and of course American Indian) who at some point likes her. Overall though, the film was quite enjoyable.

GIna-- If Lord X is a beer fan, he definitely needs to stop here in Denver-- I think we rank right up there with having one of the largeet number of micro and macro breweries.

Maybe we can get Mario to arrange that.

J.

Leia-- thanks for posting your comments about Twilight. I must say I found your comment about the cultural diversity of that small town amusing. I grew up in a small town. Now, granted, demographics have changed there since I was a kid, but our high school class had ONE Hispanic kid and that was it. And because he grew up with us, we didn't even realize he was Hispanic!!! :-)

You have piqued my interest. With the holiday, I know I won't get to see it right away, but I'll see it for sure.

J.

That's what I'm thinking! Poor Lord X -- drowning his sorrows in beer while he remembers the girl with the strawberry curl.

I heard he's in a bit of trouble with the Egyptian authorities though -- seems he got a bit of a noisy drunk on and started yelling loudly "where are all the redheads in Cairo???"

And it's hard to get deep in your cups in Cairo.

This comment has been removed by the author.

Oh Gina ... those redheads in Cairo. I hear the lack of them is the bane of many a drunk from the western world.

Jeanne ... I would be interested in hearing what you think. The cultural diversity really doesn't hit you too hard until this one scene where her entire group of friends is hanging out by a van. At that point you realize that of the people she regularly interacts with, there are no more than two people from any one culture. The only exception to this rule is the American Indians (but that is because there is a reservation near by) and of course the Cullens.

Leia said:The cultural diversity really doesn't hit you too hard until this one scene where her entire group of friends is hanging out by a van. At that point you realize that of the people she regularly interacts with, there are no more than two people from any one culture.

My first impression is: that's Hollywood. PC to the end. Of course, I'm speaking from the viewpoint on an older generation. I would like to think we as a culture have progressed from the time I attended school. But I don't see it. Not really. The other interesting comment was about the American Indians (I think Native Americans is the proper nomenclature now.)I lived in an East County suburb of San Diego where we found arrowheads on our school playground. We had NO NA's attending our school, though, even though we were very close to the "reservation." It just didn't happen. Again, I want to say Twilight is Hollywood's view of the world.

I wish it was the true one.

J.

PS: I also feel it points out another sad fact. I'm afraid most people today would accept a vampire into their circle before a person of a different culture.

Do I sound jaded?

Believe me, it makes me incredibly sad to say that.

Maybe our new President will change that perspective.

I hope so.

J.

Gina said:And it's hard to get deep in your cups in Cairo.

And yet, you are right-- the first "beer" was brewed in that very region. Pottery has been found with the proof!! I believe imported beer is becoming very popular now, too--

Modern engineering and beer. We owe our ancient Egyptian forefathers much.

J.

Oh the NAs went to reservation school ... but they were still part of her circle of friends. As for jaded, I don't know. Perhaps I have simply been blessed with a very open group of acquaintances where cultural differences really didn't matter. Therefore, I suppose I would not be the one to comment on that.

As for beer, I'm wondering why Lord X is not finding himself up in Scotland with their excellent whiskey. Certainly they are two different drinks, but he would have more luck finding his red-haired mystery woman in Scotland than he would in Egypt. For that matter, maybe he should skip it all and head straight to Ireland for Guinness and multitudes of fire-haired ladies.

@Leia: You're asking Lord X to make sense? He's seeking adventure like all slightly improper English gentlemen do.

And why else would he have gone to Milwaukee, but to explore the cultural heritage of beer? (schleil, schlozzle...)

Well, ok and to worship at Mario's feet.

In any event, I'm a little worried since the escapade with the drinking in Cairo, I haven't heard a peep out of Lord X. I hope he's not holed up in a dank jail cell.

@Jeanne:

"Again, I want to say Twilight is Hollywood's view of the world.

I wish it was the true one."

Too true. Hollywood and the SoCal-eqsue push for social integration.

Though I do see a more integrated culture, especially among the young. But it's an urban thing and it's still not as advanced as Hollywood would have us believe. My inclination is that small town and rural America isn't nearly that far along.

Of course Hollywood would have us all be size zero waify supermodels, too.

I hope Obama will help change that. The election sure proved that there is still plenty of prejudice making the rounds though.

Gina said: @ Leia, You're asking Lord X to make sense? He's seeking adventure like all slightly improper English gentlemen do.

Oh Gina, what was I thinking ... what was I thinking ...
