Welcome to Biting-Edge, a blog shared by authors and vampire experts, Mario Acevedo and Jeanne Stein. We’ll cover urban fantasy, vampires, pop culture, and all things Joss Whedon. Unlike other fantasy blogs, we don’t insist on body cavity searches (unless you ask politely). Snarkiness is most welcome...though we won't promise not to bite back!

Congratulations, first off, to Lynda Hilburn a fellow Rocky Mountain Fiction Writer, for the publication of her new book The Vampire Shrink. Enjoy this special time, Lynda.

Been watching as many of the new super/paranormal shows as I can. Last week caught The Bionic Woman. I found this review and it pretty well sums up what I thought, along with the fact that I fell asleep. I will in fairness, however, give it one more try.

I also caught Reaper, on CW, which I thought was very funny and very entertaining. I love the way they promo it as being the one new television show that will NOT inspire, change the way you think or transform your life. Gotta love heroes who go after demons garbed in protective clothing made up of Home Depot gear and armed with dirt devils! Pretty damned clever.

Looks like John Grisham is being sued over his book The Innocent Man. Attorneys for a district attorney and a former Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agent said they will file a lawsuit accusing Grisham of libel and conspiracy. The book chronicles the trial and lengthy imprisonment of Ron Williamson and Dennis Fritz, who were wrongly convicted of the 1982 rape and murder of Deborah Sue Carter of Ada. DNA evidence later cleared both men and implicated Glen Gore, who was convicted last year of Carter's murder. Grisham's book is critical of investigators and Pontotoc County District Attorney William Peterson.

Other targets of the lawsuit include another author, Robert Mayer, who wrote a similar book; Fritz; attorney Barry Scheck, who helped free Fritz and Williamson; and publishing companies involved with the two books.

Some Buffy Alumni News:

Smallville: James Marsters will be back as Brainiac later in the season. He also has a recurring role as a detective in Without A Trace.

Supernatural: Mercedes McNab (Harmony), will be guest starring on the November 15th episode of Supernatural. As a vamp, of course.

Criminal Minds: Nicholas Brendon ( Xander) will be appearing in a guest star role as Kevin, described as "a computer expert who’s part of the investigative team." His website says the role has the potential to be recurring.

On the personal writing front, yesterday was one of those days when everything I wrote looked like crap. I hate that. I’ll go over it about a million times today, but why is it that some days the words just flow and others, you have to pull the muse kicking and screaming out of her hole? Any hints as to how to coax that little demon to be more cooperative?

PS Richelle, as my deadline approaches, I’m considering your Mountain Dew diet. My question, should I warn family and friends beforehand?

PPS Mario and I have decided on a new contest. Details will be forthcoming so stay tuned!!

PPPS Read Barbara's comment posted below for more on the convolted Grisham, et al lawsuit. Thanks for posting.

Thought this may interest you and add to your post.DA Bill Peterson Suing The Innocent Man Dennis Fritz For Emotional Distress
Dennis Fritz, who wrote the book, "Journey Toward Justice", is named as a defendant in a libel lawsuit along with , John Grisham, author of "The Innocent Man", Robert Mayer, author of "The Dreams of Ada", and all their publishers, and New York City attorney Barry Scheck, Fritz's former lawyer who once represented Fritz and is co-director of The Innocence Project. With the aid of Barry Scheck and irrefutable DNA evidence, Dennis Fritz and Ron Williamson were exonerated in 1999.

Pontotoc County District Attorney Bill Peterson and Gary Rogers, a former agent for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation filed the libel lawsuit.
The lawsuit, seeks at least $75,000 compensation and demands a jury trial. Peterson and Rogers were instrumental in the conviction of Ron Williamson and Dennis Fritz in the murder of Debbie Sue Carter in Ada, Oklahoma in 1982. The conviction was later overturned on DNA evidence pursued by the Innocence Project, which Scheck heads, Dennis Fritz was wrongfully convicted of a crime he did not commit and spent 12 years in prison. Part of the lawsuit claims the defendants conspired to commit libel against the plaintiffs, generate publicity for self interest by placing them in a false light and intentionally inflicting emotional distress upon them.

So... Prosecutor with the help of Gary Rogers sent 2 innocent men, Dennis Fritz and Ron Williamson to prison for 12 years. Both Innocent men freed by DNA evaluation of crime scene evidence. Innocent man, Dennis Fritz writes book about his experiences. Prosecutor and Gary Rogers sue the innocent man they wrongfully sent to prison and Prosecutor and Rogers sue for intentionally inflicting emotional distress upon them. Only in America Folks...

Well put, Barbara. Thanks for sending this.

You know, on the writing front, I find that later on during revisions, I often can't tell what I thought was crap at the time from the truly inspired stuff. I bet you look at it today and it's better than you thought.

Chocolate helps seduce the muse, particularly if you flatter her and tell her she looks like she's lost weight. :-)

You know, I hope what you say about looking at it later and liking it better is true. And the chocolate suggestion isn't bad either.

I just couldn't bring myself to do it today. So I had lunch with a friend and kind of avoided the computer. With a deadline of Oct 31, though, I won't be able to procrastinate like that again anytime soon.

Drat.

Thanks so much for the lovely mention, Jeanne!

You are very welcome, Lynda!

I think the Mt. Dew diet is a lot more fun if you don't warn people in advance. :)

Thanks for the advice, Richelle-- I'll take it! :-)
