Welcome to Biting-Edge, a blog shared by authors and vampire experts, Mario Acevedo and Jeanne Stein. We’ll cover urban fantasy, vampires, pop culture, and all things Joss Whedon. Unlike other fantasy blogs, we don’t insist on body cavity searches (unless you ask politely). Snarkiness is most welcome...though we won't promise not to bite back!

  J' Accuse
Mario here:

I got the cover for my third Felix Gomez book, The Undead Kama Sutra.

And I accuse Richelle Mead of pre-plagiarism. If you doubt me, then check out her UK cover for Succubus Blues. Coincidence? I think not. A succubus with wings? Please, that is such a ripoff of the vampire wardrobe.

For those of you wondering about the contest, our evaluation process is hermetically sealed. Even I don't know what's going on and I'm one of the judges!

Saturday I attended The Exotic in Literature Salon, part of the Lighthouse Writers Workshop Lit Fest. The writers were Harrison Fletcher, Tamara Guirado, and Alex Espinoza. Alex read from his novel, Still Water Saints. He's the one at the lectern. Tamara is the one with the angelic literary glow behind her.

The panel discussed, "what is exotic?" and it was like talking about politics. There were a lot of opinions but no consensus was reached. Me, I consider mysteries set in Baltimore or south Boston as exotic.

What is exotic to you?

Comments:
Love the cover, Mario!

I fear that those folks who inhabit metro areas - Baltimore, Boston, etc., see those of us who write stories set in the Midwest or Wild West as...exotic.

What! You insult me, sir. I would never stoop so low. Besides, since mine was released *first*, I think we know who copied who. Also, yours is a silhouette...kind of looks like someone just took mine and Photoshop'ed out the details...

Exotic? I’ve been all over the world. That’s sort of hard to narrow down.

For the overall combination of history with a daily show of humans in their natural habitat, that would be the islands of Greece, or the small towns on the coast of Italy.

But if exotic includes excitement, then that would be the rooftops of Hong Kong. Even in the great skyscrapers of the financial district, the roofs are a land unto themselves. People live and engage in what passes for work often never making it to street level in a lifetime. You can get whatever you want, drugs, women, body parts, or whatever. The trick is to make it back down alive.

No, all in all I would have to say that the most exotic place is my mind. But that can be as scary as the Hong Kong rooftops if I spend too much time there.

So do you plan to do any signings in the exotic locations of Pueblo or Co Springs. I have an autographed copy of “Rocky Flats” but I cheated and bought it off the shelf at B&N.
