Welcome to Biting-Edge, a blog shared by authors and vampire experts, Mario Acevedo and Jeanne Stein. We’ll cover urban fantasy, vampires, pop culture, and all things Joss Whedon. Unlike other fantasy blogs, we don’t insist on body cavity searches (unless you ask politely). Snarkiness is most welcome...though we won't promise not to bite back!

  Our Friends in Books

Jeanne just posted about how's she's fond of the time she spends with her characters in her own novels. But there are also the characters we love in other novels.

Sometimes we meet these characters when we are children. BookDwarf posted yesterday about books that both adults and children can enjoy. I first read Jane Eyre when I was a clueless 13-year-old. I "found" it in the library and had no idea that anybody else had ever read it. I pronounced the title "Jane Eerie."

Naturally I loved Jasper Fforde's bonkers The Eyre Affair, about a parallel world in which literature rules and characters from books are kidnapped by brilliant villians.

Anyone else have a favorite character who was/is almost a friend? You know, one of those friends who moved away, but you shared some good times and still think of them?

On another note, I will be at Borders in San Rafael, CA, on Wednesday, July 19, 7:00 p.m. If you live in the area, please come and say hello.

Comments:
Yes, I miss Ayla and Jondolar from
Jean Auel's Earth's Children Series. Remember Clan Of The Cave Bear? That series. She's now working on the 6th book! Woo Hoo!

Lucky you to have a writer continuing the series you loved as a kid. I think I'll pick up The Once and Future King and take another look at it when I have time.

Love The Eyre Affair!

As for imaginary friends, I always stole the animals out of books. I had a horse from one novel, multiple dogs from others. When I was little I used to lie out on my front lawn with my arm around an imaginary collie and my hair in braids just like the girl on the cover of my favorite paperback. I also used to act out some of the scenes with the dogs from Where the Red Fern Grows.

But everybody did that, right?

I'm having flashbacks to animal books now.

Marguerite Henry wrote a series of books based on real horses and there was always some heartrending crisis. I used to read all those animal stories and sob like, well, like a little girl.

The Eyre Affair and its sequels are so much fun. Miss Havisham is one of my all time favorite characters ever - I have a soft spot for the crazies.

I was so delighted to find that Jasper Fforde was also, apparently, a fan. Plus, the Shakespeare/Marlowe Conspiracy Theorists make me laugh aloud just thinking about them.
