Welcome to Biting-Edge, a blog shared by authors and vampire experts, Mario Acevedo and Jeanne Stein. We’ll cover urban fantasy, vampires, pop culture, and all things Joss Whedon. Unlike other fantasy blogs, we don’t insist on body cavity searches (unless you ask politely). Snarkiness is most welcome...though we won't promise not to bite back!

  The Horror! The Horror!

Since I try to keep up on all things vampirey, I forced myself to watch about ten minutes of "Once Bitten," starring a very young Jim Carey. Carey is the teenage victim of Lauren Hutton, an aging vamp who needs a virgin in order to stay young looking.

This movie is Bad. Really bad. Embarassingly bad. It's so bad that when you watch the '80s dance fight sequence, you cringe and feel shame for the entire human race. I had to avert my eyes as Carey is dance-fought over by Hutton and his teen-girlfriend. The dancing scene contains every bad '80s dance move ever gyrated. It is, in all honesty, one of the most horrifying things I have ever seen.

Oh, and the script analysis described this movie as, "It is funny, but with a few minor changes, it could be visually and intellectually serious enough to rival Satiricon or Coppola's Rumblefish." Yeah, right.

Book News: Simon & Schuster is printing up 5,000 postcards for my novel, and Cody's Bookstore just put Happy Hour at Casa Dracula on their recommended summer reading list.

Comments:
Ok,never saw this corny movie Marta mentioned with Jim Carrey, and now will avoid it in the future.
But I do have to mention one thing that freaked me out in Barns and Nobles today. I discovered a particular book just browsing around, It was called The Vampire Book; Encyclopedia of the undead, by Gordon Melton. It contained material on vampire movies over the years, vampirism in all different countries, and the part that was most disturbing, sitings, yes, sitings. Though this freaked me a tad, I was also drawn to it, reading it over an over again.
It wasn't part of my purchases today. Real live stuff? I don't know, I think I like it better left to fantasy. I grew up in a haunted house and that's where I end the reality part.

Hi, vamprowler,

If you lived in a haunted house then you have the courage to face this bad movie. Jim Carrey is so young, you want to call Child Protective Services to intercede.

As for vamp sitings...well, people can convince themselves of anything: alien abductions, the Loch Ness monster, fruit-flavored wines.

Hi Marta,
LOLOL!
I used to be hooked on In Living Color. I remember Jim being so young and dorky. And boy was he funny. Was the vampire movie his first on screen appearance? Thank God he did other things right away so nobody would notice.
